Timber Windows Hardgate

If you need timber windows done properly in Hardgate, Woodfellas are the right choice. We make, restore, and put in timber windows out of our Hardgate workshop, working across homes and commercial clients right across Central Scotland.

Each window is built to order using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security are fitted as standard on every window.

Tenements need sash and case, newer extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete new set. Whatever the project, we make ourselves and install ourselves. No middlemen.

Our timber window range

Two types. Two sets of requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional window style for Scottish properties.

Sash windows move up and down within a box frame, with a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the standard window type on most of Hardgate’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We restore, fix, and make custom sash windows that replicate the existing profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic standards.

If your existing frames are sound, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the best option. We do full surveys before recommending replacement, so you know exactly where you are.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Swings out, lets in more ventilation, easy to reach from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became the norm on Hardgate properties from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Just like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.

All the designs, all the configurations, it’s on our timber casement windows page.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to homeowners.

Natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. This translates to better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even factored in.

In a country like Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge for most households, the thermal qualities of a timber frame make a measurable difference.

Repair it, don’t replace it

Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be removed and new timber put in its stead. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such route: when it breaks, the entire unit goes to landfill and everything starts from scratch.

Over the lifespan of a property, the ability to maintain and repair timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement represents real savings in both money and waste.

Sustainability

Every bit of timber we use is sourced from responsibly managed forest, that’s how it works.

Timber is a natural material, it locks in carbon as it works and biodegrades cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium production takes a enormous amount of energy.

If the environmental footprint of your house matters to you, timber is obviously the better option. It’s not complicated.

Look and worth

Timber windows have a substance, physical depth, and natural grain that no synthetic alternative can replicate.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows achieve an aesthetic rightness that UPVC consistently fails to replicate.

And they bring tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the attraction.

Double glazing in timber windows

All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, include double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and improves sound insulation.

Put that double glazing together with the natural insulating properties of the timber frame, and you’ve got excellent thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement.

For properties that call for a traditional divided-light appearance, we can install glazing bars as an addition.

Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the original frames and improving performance without a full replacement.

It happens a lot on Hardgate’s older properties, original sash windows that are well-built, but the single glazing admits cold air and street noise like it’s not even there.

And every unit we install meets the latest building regulations for thermal standards, so no worries there.

Listed buildings timber windows

Scotland contains over 600 recognised conservation areas.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an acceptable material, your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council requires, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

We can help with consent conditions and produce windows that meet planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Timber types

Two timber types. That’s it. We stock both for the entire window range.

Treated pine represents the most requested option. It is pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and performs reliably in Hardgate’s wet weather.

A natural timber finish, extra strength, hardwood is the answer for both. By nature more resistant to wear, and it takes stains and oils so well.

Not sure which timber to choose? We advise on the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you want.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Hardgate design, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows open out. We also produce fixed window panels for any opening setup.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

On results, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than fully replaced when damage happens. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes! If your current frames are in sound condition, we can switch to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, keeping the original frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic results.
