Timber Windows Greenock

Woodfellas made our name in Greenock producing timber windows, and that’s what we’ve always done. We produce, restore, and put in wooden windows from our Greenock premises, covering homes and businesses right across Central Scotland.

Each window is made to measure using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security come as standard on every unit.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a Victorian tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any type of property, we make them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our timber window options

Two types. Two different requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional window style for Scottish properties.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Greenock’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were fitted with sash windows, moving vertically in a box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

The best sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, fix, and build custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance where it counts.

If your existing frames are sound, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the best option. We complete full surveys before recommending any replacement, so you know exactly where you are.

Hinged windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a larger opening for airflow and means you can clean them from inside from inside. They’re standard on Greenock properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the natural choice for rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Just like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.

Our timber casement windows section covers all available options and options in complete detail.

Why timber works best for windows

Timber’s centuries-long position as the go-to window material is not just a matter of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to households.

Natural insulation

Did you know timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame thickness? That means better thermal performance from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.

In Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a genuine impact, and that adds up over time.

Repair it, don’t replace it

Timber window gets damaged? You can sort it.

Rot in a sill? Take it out and put in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Rebuild. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it gives up, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re back to square one.

Over the working life of a property, the capacity to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them represents significant savings in both money and material waste.

The sustainable option

All our timber is sourced from ethically managed forests.

Timber is a sustainable material, it holds carbon as it works and breaks down naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium production takes a enormous amount of energy.

Care about your property’s environmental footprint? Timber. Clear choice.

Character and value

Timber windows have a heft, a character, and a natural grain that no man-made material can come close to.

Sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows fit. UPVC never quite manages.

And they add real value to a property, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

Every window we make, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted. No extras needed.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Lifts sound insulation.

The timber frame’s inherent thermal characteristics combined with the double-glazed sealed unit achieve excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window types. That’s what you get as standard.

If your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance, we can fit glazing bars, just ask.

Where older timber windows are solid but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames and improving thermal performance without needing a full replacement.

Regular request on Greenock’s older properties. Original sash windows: solid. Single glazing: allows in cold and ambient noise.

Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we put in satisfies them. No exceptions.

Timber windows and conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve been through all of it. We know what’s required.

We can walk you through consent requirements and make windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Timber types

We stock two timber types across the entire window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is what most people go for, pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and handles Greenock’s damp climate with no a problem.

Want a natural timber look? Need extra durability? Hardwood. Inherently more immune to deterioration. Accepts stains and oils really well.

We’ll recommend which timber is best for your project based on the property, the exposure level, and what finish you’re after.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

Sash and case is the traditional Greenock window, moving up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open outward, that’s the other. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood. And we make fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.

Is timber a better choice than UPVC?

Yes, for performance, longevity, and appearance, timber is better. It insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the existing frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic standards.
