Timber Windows Greenhead

Greenhead has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our premises, working across residential properties and commercial properties all over Central Scotland.

Each window is custom-built using ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and improved security are included as standard on every unit.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a complete new set for any sort of property, we produce them ourselves and fit ourselves.

Our timber window lineup

Two types. Two different requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s classic window design.

Sash windows move vertically within a box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the standard window type on most of Greenhead’s period tenements, and the correct replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We refurbish, sort, and build custom sash windows that precisely match existing profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance.

The original frames are solid, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible call. We do full surveys first, before we recommend going further.

Casement windows

Casement windows open outward on hinges, bigger opening for fresh air, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll spot them across Greenhead properties dating from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We make custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Double glazed as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Generations of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to property owners. The record say it all.

Natural thermal insulation

Here’s something that trips up people: timber actually conducts heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness. That means the frame itself is doing better thermal work before you even factor in the double glazing.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a genuine difference to what you spend.

Repair it, don’t replace it

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and fresh timber fitted in its stead. A damaged portion of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such alternative: when it fails, the whole unit ends up in landfill and everything starts again.

Year after year, look after rather than start over. Over the life of a property, that adds up to real money not spent and a lot less material going to landfill.

Environmental credentials

Every bit of timber we select is sourced from responsibly managed woodland.

Timber is a renewable material that stores carbon throughout its working life and decomposes naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.

If the environmental side matters to you the environmental footprint of your home, timber is the clear option.

Aesthetics and worth

Timber windows have a heft, physical depth, and texture that no artificial alternative can replicate.

On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows belong in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth considering if the look matter to you.

And they bring tangible value to a property too, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the attraction.

Double glazing in wooden windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that leaves our workshop comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always has.

The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame: it’s two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which cuts down on heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.

Traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a big difference.

Got older timber windows that are still in good shape but only single glazed? In many cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the original frames and boosting thermal performance without replacing everything.

It happens a lot on Greenhead’s older properties, existing sash windows that are solid, but the single glazing allows in cold air and ambient noise like it’s not even there.

Every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations for thermal standards.

Conservation area timber windows

There are more than 600 conservation areas in Scotland, quite a number.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an acceptable material, your local council may require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a strong understanding of council requirements.

We can advise on consent conditions and build windows that meet every planning condition while still giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail if you want to read up.

Timber options

We use two timber types across all window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is the most popular choice, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and works well in Greenhead’s damp weather.

If you want a natural timber look, or if you need something harder-wearing, hardwood is the answer, it’s naturally more resistant to deterioration and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

We advise on the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you want. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.

Timber windows FAQ

What kinds of timber windows do you offer?

We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Greenhead design, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing out. We also make fixed window panels for any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For results, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the same frame width, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be restored not fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and highly favoured in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?

In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That retains the existing frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic results.
