Timber Windows Greenbank

If you need timber windows done right in Greenbank, Woodfellas are the right choice. We produce, restore, and put in wooden windows out of our Greenbank workshop, working across residential properties and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.

Each window is made to measure using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and improved security are included as standard on every window.

Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a full new set. Whatever the property type, we make in-house and install ourselves. No middlemen.

Our timber window range

We manufacture two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and needs. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The original Scottish window, and still the best.

Slide vertically. Timber box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Greenbank’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We renovate, sort, and build custom sash windows that nail the period profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results.

A lot of the time, restoring the original frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better call if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full assessment before suggesting full replacement.

Casement windows

Hinged. Open out to open. Bigger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Standard on Greenbank properties built from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Just like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.

Why timber makes sense for windows

Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to property owners.

Natural insulating properties

Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. Stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

Scotland. Cold. Costly to heat. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a measurable impact.

Timber windows, repair before replace

The great thing about timber windows is that if something goes wrong, you can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Take it out and fit fresh timber. Damaged section of frame? Repair. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it gives up, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Think about it: over the lifespan of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious money and reduces a lot of material waste.

Sustainability

Every bit of timber we work with comes from ethically managed forests, that’s non-negotiable.

Timber is a natural material, it stores carbon as it ages and biodegrades naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium production takes a enormous amount of energy.

Your home’s environmental footprint matters to you? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.

Beauty and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made alternative can match it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way UPVC never quite manages.

Timber windows also bring tangible value to a property, particularly period properties where period features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in wooden windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we produce comes with double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always has been.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two sheets of glass. Cavity between them. Reduces heat transfer. Boosts sound insulation.

When combined with the inherent insulating properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window gives you excellent thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement styles.

We can also fit glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance.

Still solid but single glazed? We can often switch to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames, improving performance, and skipping a full replacement.

Common on Greenbank’s older properties. Existing sash windows: well-built. Single glazing: lets in cold and ambient noise.

Every unit we put in: satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland has more than 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one changes what you can do with your windows.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council will often require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We understand what the council expects, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.

We can help you with consent conditions and build windows that meet every planning condition while still giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail if you want to read up.

Types of timber we use

Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across all window range.

Treated pine is the most requested choice. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a painted finish readily, and performs well in Greenbank’s wet climate.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra strength? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more resistant to damage, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Property, exposure, finish, three things we look at before advising on the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Greenbank style, operating by sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

On every fronts, performance, longevity, and appearance, yes, timber is the superior choice. It insulates better at comparable frame widths, lasts considerably longer when regularly maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced when damage happens. Timber is also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.

Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in solid condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the existing frames and look while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
