Timber Windows Govan

Woodfellas. Govan-based timber window experts. We manufacture, renovate, and install wooden windows from our Govan premises, serving residential properties and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Built to order, responsibly sourced timber, double glazing, enhanced security. Every window we make is built the same way. No shortcuts.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a full replacement set for any sort of property, we build them in-house and fit ourselves.

Timber windows we make

We build two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Whichever you pick, both are available in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional Scottish window type.

Slide up and down. Box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Govan’s period tenements and the only replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, sort, and make custom sash windows that nail the existing profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.

If your existing frames are in good condition, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible route. We carry out full surveys before recommending replacement, so you always know where you are.

Hinged windows

Casement windows are hinged and swing outward to open, giving a larger opening for ventilation and making cleaning from inside straightforward. They’re widespread on Govan properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we produce custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

For more on options and configurations, our timber casement windows section has all the detail you need.

Why timber works best for windows

Generations of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to households. The numbers say it all.

How timber insulates naturally

Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. Stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

Scotland’s not exactly tropical, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a tangible effect to what you pay.

Repair, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Remove it, put in new timber. Damaged frame part? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it goes, it goes to landfill, you start again.

Over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them saves real money and reduces waste.

The sustainable choice

The timber we work with is sourced from ethically managed forest, every length of it.

Holds carbon as long as it works, then biodegrades naturally. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive. The difference doesn’t need explaining.

Concerned about your property’s carbon footprint? Timber. Obvious choice.

Timber windows, character and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made alternative can match it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if aesthetics matter to you.

And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the attraction.

Double glazing timber windows

Every window we produce, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons required.

Two sheets of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and manages the rest, cutting heat transfer, improving sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent insulating qualities with double glazing and you get excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We fit glazing bars.

Still sound but single glazed? We can in many cases upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames, boosting performance, and skipping a full replacement.

This is a frequent project on Govan’s older properties, where solidly built original sash windows are solid but single glazing admits cold air and ambient noise.

Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we fit complies with them. No exceptions.

Listed buildings timber windows

Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one changes what you are permitted to do with your windows.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an acceptable material, your local council will often require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council requires, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

We can walk you through consent conditions and build windows that satisfy every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail if you want to read up.

Timber types

Woodfellas uses two types of timber across its full window product range.

Treated pine: most chosen choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Takes paint well. Performs well in Govan’s rain-heavy weather.

Want a natural timber finish? Need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood. Naturally more immune to deterioration. Accepts stains and oils really well.

We recommend the right timber for each project, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you need. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.

FAQ, timber windows

What styles of timber windows do you make?

We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Govan style, sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows open outward. We also produce fixed window panels for any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

For performance, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber is better. It insulates better at the same frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That keeps the existing frames and appearance while lifting thermal and acoustic results.
