Timber Windows Gourock

Woodfellas are Gourock’s leading timber window makers, manufacturing, refurbishing, and fitting timber windows from a Gourock base that works across houses and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Each window is made to measure using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and improved security are included as standard on every window.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a traditional tenement, casement windows for a modern extension, or a complete set of new windows for any type of property, we build them ourselves and fit ourselves.

Our timber window range

We produce two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and specifications. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

The traditional Scottish window type.

Sash windows operate by sliding vertically within a box frame, via a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They represent the standard window type on most of Gourock’s period tenements, and they’re the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, repair, and build custom sash windows. Period profiles. Original proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Restoration often covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Most sensible call where original frames are solid. We inspect fully before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Swings outward, lets in a wider flow of air, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became the norm on Gourock properties from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We produce custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one made to measure. Fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber windows are the right choice

There’s a good reason people have been putting timber windows in properties for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to property owners.

Natural thermal performance

Here’s something that trips up people: timber actually transfers heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width. That means the frame itself is already doing stronger thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a real difference.

Repair, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill? Remove it, put in fresh timber. Damaged frame part? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it goes, it goes to landfill, you start again.

Over the lifetime of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than replacing them cuts real cost and cuts down on waste.

Timber and the environment

Every bit of timber we work with is procured from responsibly managed forests, that’s non-negotiable.

Timber is a natural material, it holds carbon as it works and biodegrades naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a huge amount of energy.

If you care about the environmental impact of your house, timber is the clear option.

Look and worth

Timber windows have a weight, a character, and a grain that no artificial alternative can come close to.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly off, it just can’t that same fit.

Timber windows also bring genuine value to a property, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the property’s appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Every window we build, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons required.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, employing two layers of glass separated by a sealed cavity to cut heat transfer and improve sound insulation.

The timber frame’s natural thermal qualities combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window types. That’s what you get as standard.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can fit those too.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still in good shape? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration. Original frames stay. Thermal performance gets better. No full replacement.

It’s a very frequent project on Gourock’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold and ambient noise. Easily fixed.

Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we install meets them. No exceptions.

Timber windows in conservation areas

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an acceptable material, your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council expects.

We can walk you through consent requirements and build windows that satisfy every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail if you want to read up.

Timber types

We work with two timber types across all window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is the most popular choice. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a paint finish readily, and performs well in Gourock’s rain-heavy climate.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra strength? Hardwood is what you need, by nature more immune to wear, and it accepts stains and oils so well.

Not sure which timber to go for? We recommend the right option for each project based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you want.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

Which timber window types do you manufacture?

We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Gourock design, moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Many cases, yes. The existing frames are good, so we upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames remain, character is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic performance improves, without a full replacement.
