Timber Windows Glenboig

If you need timber windows done right in Glenboig, Woodfellas are the ones to call. We make, restore, and fit wooden windows out of our Glenboig workshop, working across residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window we build is made to measure from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security included as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a full replacement set for any sort of property, we produce them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our range of timber windows

We make two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the best.

Sash windows work on a clever system: they slide up and down in a timber box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. You’ll see them on most of Glenboig’s period tenements, and if you’ve got a listed building or conservation area property, they’re the required replacement where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, repair, and build custom sash windows that nail the original profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest route where original frames are sound. We survey fully before recommending replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows swing outward on hinges, larger opening for fresh air, easy access from inside. You’ll spot them on Glenboig properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations, so whatever configuration you need, we can make it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows section has more information on all available designs and configurations.

Why timber windows make sense

There’s a good reason people have been fitting timber windows in properties for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to households.

Natural insulation

Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. This translates to stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even factored in.

In Scotland, where energy costs are a real issue, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a tangible impact, and that adds up over time.

Repair before replace

Timber window gets damaged? You can sort it.

Rot in a sill can be taken out and fresh timber spliced in. A damaged part of frame can be repaired. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit goes to landfill and you start again.

Think about it: over the life of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious money and reduces a lot of material waste.

Environmental performance

Every bit of timber we use is procured from responsibly managed forests, that’s how we operate.

Timber is a replenishable resource that holds carbon across its lifespan and decomposes cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a petroleum-derived plastic, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy.

Your property’s carbon impact matters to you? Then timber is the clear choice. It always has been.

Appeal and property value

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, heft, depth, grain. No artificial alternative can replicate that.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC never quite manages.

And they contribute real value to a property, especially period homes where period features are what buyers look for.

Timber windows with double glazing

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

The sealed unit fits within the timber frame, using two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity to limit heat transfer and improve sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent thermal qualities with double glazing and you get excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.

We can also add glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light look.

Where older timber windows remain structurally sound but only single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the existing frames and boosting performance without necessitating a full replacement.

This is a regular project on Glenboig’s older properties, where solidly built existing sash windows are solid but single glazing lets in cold air and road noise.

Every unit we install: complies with current building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland has over 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will likely require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland for over 20 years, so we understand what the council requires, no surprises.

We can advise on consent requirements and build windows that meet planning condition while giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Timber types

Woodfellas uses two types of timber across its full window range.

Treated pine is the most chosen option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and performs reliably in Glenboig’s damp climate.

A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood answers both. By nature more wear-resistant, and it takes stains and oils so well.

We’ll advise on which timber is best for your job based on the property, the exposure, and what look you’re after.

Timber windows FAQ

Which wooden window types do you make?

We produce both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Glenboig style, operating by sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels to suit any opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

For performance, lifespan, and looks? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Can I replace single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are sound, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, appearance stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance improves, without a full replacement.
