Woodfellas are Glen Village’s established timber window experts, building, refurbishing, and installing wooden windows from a Glen Village base that serves homes and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window we make is made to measure from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security included as standard.
Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full replacement set: we produce ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our timber window lineup
We produce two main types of timber window, one suited to older properties, one built for newer ones. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window type.
Sash windows slide vertically within a timber box frame, via a system of weighted cords and pulleys. They are the standard window type on most of Glen Village’s period tenements, and they’re the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We restore, sort, and make custom sash windows that precisely match original profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance.
The original frames are sound, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better option. We complete full surveys first, before we recommend going further.

Casement windows
Hinged. Swing out to open. Larger opening, easier access from inside. Typical on Glen Village properties dating from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations, so whatever setup you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and double glazed as standard.
For more on designs and configurations, our timber casement windows section has all the detail you need.
Why timber makes sense for windows
Timber has been the top window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to households.
Natural insulating properties
Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. Better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames retain warmth better makes a real effect to what you pay.
Fix, don’t replace
Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can fix it.
Got rot in a sill? You take it out and put in fresh timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it breaks, the whole thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting over.
Year after year, repair and maintain rather than replace. Over the life of a property, that adds up to real money not spent and a lot less material going to landfill.
Timber and the environment
Every piece of timber we use is sourced from responsibly managed woodland, that’s how it works.
Timber: sustainable. Stores carbon. Decomposes cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly carbon-heavy.
For those for whom the carbon impact of their property is a priority, timber is the clear option.
Character and value
Timber windows have a heft, a character, and a natural grain that no synthetic material can replicate.
Sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows fit. UPVC just can’t.
Value, too. On older properties, where period features are part of what makes them special, timber windows add genuine value that UPVC can’t match.
Double-glazed timber windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture feature double-glazed sealed units as standard. It’s always included.
Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Cavity between them. Cuts heat transfer. Boosts sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they deliver strong thermal and acoustic results across both types, sash or casement, same result.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light appearance? We can add those too.
Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping the existing frames and lifting thermal performance without replacing everything.
This is a regular request on Glen Village’s older properties, where well-constructed existing sash windows perform structurally well but single glazing allows in cold air and road noise.
Every sealed unit we install complies with current building regulations governing thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas
More than 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will likely require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.
Twenty years of producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve been through all of it. We understand what’s required.
We can advise on consent conditions and manufacture windows meeting every planning condition while giving you modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in more detail.
Timber choices
Woodfellas uses two types of timber for its full window product range.
Treated pine is the most popular option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and works reliably in Glen Village’s damp weather.
A natural timber look, extra strength, hardwood is the answer for both. By nature more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils so well.
Not sure which timber to choose? We recommend the right timber for each project based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you want.
Timber windows FAQ
Which timber window types do you make?
We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Glen Village style, moving vertically within a box frame. Casement windows open outward. We also make fixed window panels for any window opening setup.
Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?
On results, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in solid condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is better thermal and acoustic performance while keeping the original frames and appearance.
