Timber Windows Girvan

If you need timber windows done right in Girvan, Woodfellas are who you want. We build, refurbish, and fit timber windows out of our Girvan base, covering houses and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window that leaves our workshop is made to measure from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a traditional tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any kind of property, we produce them in-house and put them in ourselves.

Our range of timber windows

Two main types of timber window, each perfectly suited to different properties and requirements. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash window types

The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.

Sash windows slide vertically within a timber box frame, with a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Girvan’s period tenements, and the correct replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

The finest sash windows look exactly like the original. We restore, sort, and manufacture custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards where it matters.

Restoration often includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the best call where the original frames are in good condition. We complete full surveys before recommending any replacement.

Hinged casement windows

The hinged window. Swings outward, lets in more air, easy to reach from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became standard on Girvan properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Why timber windows make sense

Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to property owners.

Natural insulation

Did you know timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame width? That means superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before you even consider the double glazing.

In Scotland, where heating bills are a real concern, the insulating qualities of a timber frame make a measurable effect, and that matters over time.

Fix, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail, new timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is not the same: no repair option, so when it breaks, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Over the life of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than having to replace them saves real money and cuts down on waste.

Sustainability

We get all our timber from sustainably managed woodland, so you can know it’s responsibly produced.

Timber is a natural resource, it holds carbon as it works and decomposes naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a enormous amount of energy.

Your home’s carbon impact is important? Then timber is the clear choice. It always has been.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made material can copy it.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

And they bring tangible value to a property too, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazed wooden windows

Every window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units fitted. No add-ons required.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, using two panes of glass with a cavity to reduce heat transfer and boost sound insulation.

The timber frame’s natural insulating qualities combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can add those as well.

Got older timber windows that are still in good shape but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the existing frames and improving thermal performance without a full replacement.

It’s a particularly frequent request on Girvan’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold and road noise. Easily fixed.

And every unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so you’re covered.

Timber windows and conservation areas

Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one changes what you are permitted to do with your windows.

Conservation area, and your windows need replacing? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council expects.

We walk you through consent conditions. We make windows that tick every planning condition. Modern performance included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Types of timber we work with

Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across all window product range.

Most people pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and handles Girvan’s damp climate with no issue.

Want a natural timber finish? Need extra durability? Hardwood. By nature more immune to wear. Accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll tell you which timber is most appropriate for your job based on the property, the exposure, and what finish you’re after.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

What timber windows can you make?

We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Girvan style, moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing out. We also build fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

On all three counts, thermal performance, longevity, and appearance, yes, timber is the superior choice. It insulates better at equivalent frame thicknesses, lasts a lot longer when regularly maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?

In many cases, yes! If your existing frames are in good condition, we can convert to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames and appearance while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
