Woodfellas are Galston’s leading timber window makers, manufacturing, renovating, and putting in wooden windows from a Galston workshop that covers residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Each window is custom-built using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and enhanced security are included as standard on every unit.
Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full new set: we build in-house and fit ourselves.
Our wooden window range
Two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and requirements. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The classic Scottish window, and still the go-to.
Move vertically. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Galston’s period tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, sort, and make custom ones matching period profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards where it matters.
A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better call if the frames themselves are still in good shape. We always do a full inspection before suggesting a replacement.

Casement windows
Hinged. Open outward to open. Larger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Common on Galston properties dating from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed arrangements, so whatever setup you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.
All the styles, all the configurations, it’s on our timber casement windows section.
Why choose timber for your windows
There’s a good reason people have been installing timber windows in homes for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to homeowners.
Natural insulation
Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. This gives you superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.
Scotland depends on heating bills. A timber frame’s insulating properties make a real difference to what you pay, and that saving shows up over time.
Repair, not replace
If a timber window gets damaged, the good news is you can repair it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Remove it and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Repair. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it gives up, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Over the life of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than having to replace them saves real cost and cuts down on waste.
Eco performance
The timber we use comes from sustainably managed forest, every bit of it.
Timber is a natural resource, it holds carbon as it works and breaks down naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a huge amount of energy.
Your property’s environmental footprint matters to you? Then timber is the clear choice. It always has been.
Character and value
Timber windows have a weight, physical depth, and natural grain that no synthetic material can reproduce.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if the look matter to you.
They add real property value too. Especially older properties. Original or sympathetic features count to buyers.
Double glazing in timber windows
Every window we make, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons required.
Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Sealed cavity between them. Limits heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.
We can also fit glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light appearance.
Still solid but single glazed? We can in many cases convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the existing frames, lifting performance, and skipping a full replacement.
This is a frequent request on Galston’s older properties, where solidly built existing sash windows perform structurally well but single glazing admits cold and ambient noise.
Every unit we fit meets current building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and being in one changes what you are permitted to do with your windows.
Where a property is located in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local planning authority will often require replacements to replicate the original design in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We understand what the council requires.
We can walk you through consent conditions and build windows that meet planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.
Timber types
Woodfellas works with two types of timber across its entire window product range.
Treated pine is what most customers go for, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and handles Galston’s rain-heavy climate without a problem.
If a natural timber look is what you want, or if extra longevity is called for, hardwood is the choice. It’s naturally more resistant to wear and accepts stains and oils beautifully.
Property. Exposure level. Finish. We recommend the right timber for each project.
Common questions about timber windows
What types of timber windows can you make?
Sash and case is the traditional Galston window, moving vertically in a timber box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open outward, that’s the other. Both come in treated pine or hardwood. And we build fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.
Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?
On performance, lifespan, and looks: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in good condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This retains the existing frames and appearance while boosting thermal and acoustic standards.
