Timber Windows Frognal

Woodfellas are the timber window experts based in Frognal. We manufacture, restore, and fit wooden windows from our Frognal premises, covering both homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Not a single window we make without being custom-built. Responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and upgraded security, all standard.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of new windows for any type of property, we make them in-house and fit ourselves.

Timber windows we make

We make two main types of timber window, each designed for different properties and needs. Whichever you pick, both are available in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

Scotland’s traditional window design.

Sash windows work on a simple but clever system: they move vertically in a box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. You’ll spot them on most of Frognal’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the only accepted replacement where sash and case was the existing design.

The best sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, sort, and manufacture custom ones replicating period profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic standards where it matters.

The original frames are sound, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better call. We carry out full assessments first, before we recommend going further.

Outward-opening casement windows

The hinged window. Swings out, lets in more ventilation, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became the norm on Frognal properties from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three arrangements, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we build is built to order and double glazed as standard.

For more on options and choices, our timber casement windows page has everything you need.

Why timber makes sense for windows

There’s a reason people have been installing timber windows in homes for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to property owners.

Natural insulation

Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. Stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

In a country like Scotland, where heating bills are a real issue for property owners, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable difference.

Repair, not replace

Where deterioration occurs in a timber window, remediation remains a viable choice.

Rot in a sill, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets replaced in section. The story with UPVC is not the same: no repair option, so when it breaks, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Year after year, maintain rather than replace. Over the lifetime of a property, that means real cost saved and a lot less waste going to landfill.

Eco performance

We get all our timber from ethically managed forests, so you can rest easy it’s ethically produced.

Timber: natural. Locks in carbon. Biodegrades cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium manufacturing: extremely carbon-heavy.

For those for whom the environmental impact of their home is a concern, timber is the obvious option.

Look and worth

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, heft, character, natural grain. No artificial alternative can replicate that.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows fit right in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth noting if the look count to you.

They add genuine property value too. Especially period homes. Period features matter to potential buyers.

Double glazed timber windows

All windows manufactured by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, come with double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame, two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, limiting heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent thermal characteristics with double glazing and you get strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.

Traditional divided-light appearance? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real visual difference.

The frames are sound, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving what’s worth saving, improving performance, no full replacement required.

It’s a particularly frequent request on Frognal’s older properties, solid original sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and road noise. Readily fixed.

Every unit we fit: complies with current building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows in conservation areas

Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas.

In a conservation area? UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been making timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council requires, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.

We can walk you through consent conditions and produce windows meeting every planning condition while delivering modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in more detail.

Timber types we use

Woodfellas uses two types of timber for its entire window range.

The most popular option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and works well in Frognal’s wet weather.

If a natural timber finish is what you want, or if extra longevity is needed, hardwood is the choice. It’s inherently more wear-resistant and takes stains and oils very well.

Property. Exposure. Finish. We help you choose the right timber for each job.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Frognal style, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

Yes, for results, longevity, and appearance, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In most cases, yes! If your existing frames are in solid condition, we can upgrade to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, keeping the existing frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
