Timber Windows Fenwick

If you need timber windows done properly in Fenwick, Woodfellas are the ones to call. We make, restore, and install timber windows out of our Fenwick premises, covering residential properties and businesses right across Central Scotland.

Each window is built to order using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security come as standard on every unit.

Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a modern extension? A complete new set for any property? We produce them all ourselves and fit ourselves.

Our range of timber windows

Two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s traditional window type.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Fenwick’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were built with sash windows, sliding up and down in a timber box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We restore, fix, and manufacture custom sash windows that precisely match existing profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance.

A lot of the time, renovating the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible route if the frames themselves are still solid. We always do a full inspection before suggesting full replacement.

Casement window types

Casement windows are hinged and swing out to open, creating a bigger opening for airflow and making cleaning from inside straightforward. They’re standard on Fenwick properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we make custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Why timber windows make sense

Timber has been the top window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to homeowners.

Natural insulation

Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. The outcome is superior thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing comes into it.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a real difference to what you pay, and that saving adds up over time.

Repair it, don’t replace it

The key thing about timber windows is that if something gets damaged, you can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Take it out and splice in new timber. Damaged section of frame? Replace in section. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it goes, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re back to square one.

Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than going for full replacement saves serious cost and cuts a lot of waste.

Sustainability

All timber used in our windows is obtained from sustainably managed forest.

Timber is a natural material, it holds carbon as it stands and breaks down cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium production takes a significant amount of power.

Concerned about your property’s environmental impact? Timber. Obvious choice.

Aesthetics and worth

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, heft, depth, grain. No artificial material can replicate that.

On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows belong in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if the look matter to you.

And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the attraction.

Double glazed timber windows

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.

The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame, two sheets of glass with a cavity between them, cutting heat transfer and lifting sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they achieve strong thermal and acoustic results across both types, sash or casement, same result.

For properties requiring a traditional divided-light look, we can fit glazing bars as an addition.

Got older timber windows that are still in good shape but only single glazed? In many cases we can switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the existing frames and lifting thermal performance without a full replacement.

It’s a particularly frequent job on Fenwick’s older properties, well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and ambient noise. Easily fixed.

Every sealed unit we install complies with current building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows in listed buildings and conservation areas

More than 600 conservation areas across Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an approved window material. Your local council may require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We understand what the council requires.

Consent requirements, planning conditions, modern standards, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.

Timber types

Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across the entire window product range.

Most people choose treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a painted finish really well, and holds up in Fenwick’s damp conditions without any issue.

Want a natural timber finish? Need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood. Naturally more immune to wear. Accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We recommend the right timber for each project, taking into consideration the property age, its exposure level, and the required finish.

Timber windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows can you make?

We make two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Fenwick design, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing out. We also build fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

Yes, for results, longevity, and appearance, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the same frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?

In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That retains the existing frames and look while lifting thermal and acoustic performance.
