Woodfellas are the timber window team based in Erskine. We manufacture, restore, and fit wooden windows from our Erskine base, working across both residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Every window we make is custom-built from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and enhanced security fitted as standard.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a complete new set for any kind of property, we make them in-house and put them in ourselves.
Our timber window range
Two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.
Sash windows move up and down within a box frame, with a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the historic window type on most of Erskine’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We refurbish, fix, and build custom sash windows that replicate original profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance.
Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Most sensible option where original frames are in good condition. We inspect fully before recommending replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a wider opening for ventilation and means you can clean them from inside from inside. They’re common on Erskine properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual choice for extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we make custom timber casement windows in all three styles. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.
Our timber casement windows page covers all listed designs and choices in full detail.
Wood windows, why they’re the right choice
There’s a good reason people have been installing timber windows in homes for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners.
Timber’s natural insulation
Here’s something that surprises people: timber actually transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame width. That means the frame itself is doing stronger thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.
Scotland’s not exactly tropical, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames retain warmth better makes a real difference to what you spend.
Repair, don’t replace
If a timber window is damaged, the good news is you can sort it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Take it out and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it fails, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re back to square one.
Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them saves serious cost and reduces a lot of waste.
The sustainable choice
The timber we select is procured from responsibly managed woodland, every piece of it.
Timber is a renewable material that stores carbon for its entire life and decomposes cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic based on oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.
If the environmental footprint of your home is important to you, timber is clearly the better option. It’s straightforward.
Timber windows, character and value
Timber windows have a substance, a depth, and a natural grain that no synthetic material can match.
Sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also bring real value to a property, particularly period homes where original or sympathetic features are what attracts buyers.
Double glazed wooden windows
Every window we produce, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted. No extras needed.
The sealed unit sits within the timber frame, using two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity to reduce heat transfer and boost sound insulation.
The timber frame’s natural insulating qualities combined with the double-glazed sealed unit achieve strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.
If your property needs a traditional divided-light appearance, we can fit glazing bars, just let us know.
The frames are solid, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can switch to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving what’s worth saving, lifting performance, no full replacement needed.
This is a common job on Erskine’s older properties. The original sash windows are solid, but the single glazing admits cold air and road noise, and converting to double glazing addresses both.
Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we install meets them. No exceptions.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
We’ve been making timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council requires, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.
We help with consent requirements. We produce windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern performance included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Wood options
Woodfellas works with two types of timber across its entire window product range.
Treated pine is the most requested option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up reliably in Erskine’s damp climate.
A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood is the answer for both. By nature more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils so well.
We help you choose the most appropriate timber for each job, taking into account the property style, its exposure, and the wanted finish.
Common questions about timber windows
What types of timber windows do you make?
Sash and case is the traditional Erskine style, sliding up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing out, that’s the other. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood. And we build fixed window panels too, for any window opening setup.
Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?
On performance, lifespan, and looks: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the same frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.
Upgrading single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?
In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This retains the original frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic standards.
