Woodfellas started in Elderslie making timber windows, and that’s still what we do. We make, refurbish, and put in wooden windows from our Elderslie workshop, covering homes and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Built to order, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, improved security. Every window that leaves our workshop is built the same way. No shortcuts.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a newer extension, or a full replacement set for any kind of property, we make them ourselves and install ourselves.
Wooden windows we make
We manufacture two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and specifications. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash and case windows
The classic Scottish window, and still the go-to.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Elderslie’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding vertically in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We renovate, sort, and make custom sash windows that match existing profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.
If your existing frames are in good condition, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible route. We complete full assessments before recommending any replacement, so you know exactly where you stand.

Casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and swing outward to open, giving a bigger opening for airflow and making cleaning from inside straightforward. They’re standard on Elderslie properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever setup you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows
Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to households. The numbers say it all.
Natural insulation
The frame counts, not just the glass. Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness, giving superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
Scotland. Cold. Costly to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a real difference.
Timber windows, repair before replace
Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can repair it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and fresh timber put in. A damaged section of frame can be repaired. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it fails, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you start again.
Year after year, look after rather than start over. Over the life of a property, that means real cost not spent and a lot less material going to landfill.
Timber and sustainability
Every length of timber we work with is sourced from responsibly managed woodland.
Timber is a sustainable resource, it locks in carbon as it stands and breaks down naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium production takes a huge amount of power.
Your home’s carbon footprint matters to you? Then timber is the clear option. It always has been.
Character and value
Timber windows have a heft, a depth, and a texture that no man-made material can match.
On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way UPVC simply can’t match.
They contribute genuine property value too. Especially period homes. Period features count to potential buyers.
Double glazing in wooden windows
All windows made by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, come with double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.
The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the inherent insulating properties of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement.
Traditional divided-light look? We can fit glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a real difference.
If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This preserves the existing frames and improves thermal performance without a full replacement.
Elderslie’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Solid original sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold and road noise like it isn’t there.
Every unit we put in meets current building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland has in excess of 600 designated conservation areas.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not approved. Council will often require replacements mirroring the original. Material, design, profile.
Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve been through all of it. We understand what’s required.
We walk you through consent conditions. We produce windows that tick every planning condition. Modern performance guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Wood options
We use two timber types across all window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.
The most common option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up reliably in Elderslie’s wet climate.
If you want a natural timber look, or if you need something harder-wearing, hardwood is the one, it’s naturally more immune to wear and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
We help you choose the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you want. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.
FAQ, timber windows
What types of timber windows do you produce?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Elderslie design, moving up and down in a box frame. Casements: hinged, open outward. Fixed panels available too, for any opening setup.
Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?
On results, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced when damage happens. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.
Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in good condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That preserves the existing frames and look while improving thermal and acoustic results.
