Woodfellas are Duntocher’s foremost timber window specialists, building, restoring, and installing timber windows from a Duntocher premises that works across houses and business properties across Central Scotland.
Each window is made to measure using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and enhanced security are fitted as standard on every window.
Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a modern extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any sort of property, we produce them in-house and install ourselves.
Our timber windows
Two types of timber window. Each built for different properties and specifications. Both available in treated pine or hardwood. Both including double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window style.
Slide vertically. Box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Duntocher’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, fix, and manufacture custom sash windows that match period profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.
The original frames are sound, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better option. We complete full surveys first, before we ever recommend going further.

Hinged casement windows
The hinged window. Opens out, lets in more air, easy to clean from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became standard on Duntocher properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Just like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.
For more on options and configurations, our timber casement windows page has all the detail you need.
Why timber makes sense for windows
Timber has been the top window material for centuries. Not just tradition, it truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to households.
Natural insulating properties
Here’s something that surprises people: timber actually transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame thickness. That means the frame itself is already doing more thermal work before you even add the double glazing.
In Scotland, where heating bills are a real concern, the thermal qualities of a timber frame make a genuine effect, and that matters over time.
Repair, not replace
Timber window deteriorates? You can fix it.
Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You take it out and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Repair. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it goes, the entire thing goes to landfill and you’re starting again.
Over a property’s lifespan: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves cost. Cuts waste.
The sustainable choice
All timber that we put into our windows is procured from responsibly managed woodland.
Timber is a sustainable resource that holds carbon for its entire lifespan and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-based plastic, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy.
For homeowners for whom the environmental footprint of their home is a consideration, timber represents the obvious choice.
Look and worth
The substance, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is something no man-made material can replicate.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and something’s slightly off, it never quite manages that same fit.
Value, too. On period properties, where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal, timber windows contribute genuine worth that UPVC can’t match.
Double-glazed timber windows
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.
The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two sheets of glass with a cavity between them, cutting heat transfer and improving sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.
Traditional divided-light appearance? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real visual difference.
The frames are sound, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining what’s worth keeping, boosting thermal performance, no full replacement required.
Duntocher’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Well-constructed existing sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and road noise like it isn’t there.
Every unit we put in complies with the latest building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows in conservation areas
Scotland: more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not permitted. Council will likely require replacements mirroring the original. Material, design, profile.
We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council requires, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.
We can help you with consent conditions and build windows that tick every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth if you want to read up.
Timber types
Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across all window range.
Most customers pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up in Duntocher’s damp weather with no trouble.
Want a natural timber finish or need extra durability? Hardwood is the answer, inherently more resistant to deterioration, and it takes stains and oils so well.
We recommend the best timber for each project, taking into consideration the property age, its exposure, and the desired finish.
Timber windows FAQ
What timber windows can you make?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Duntocher design, moving up and down in a box frame. Casements: hinged, open outward. Fixed panels made too, for any opening setup.
Is timber better than UPVC?
On every counts, performance, lifespan, and looks, yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at comparable frame widths, lasts a lot longer when regularly maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.
Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in good condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is improved thermal and acoustic performance while retaining the original frames and appearance.
