Timber Windows Dundonald

Dundonald has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, restore, and put in timber windows from our premises, serving homes and business properties all over Central Scotland.

Every window we make is built to order from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security fitted as standard.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we make them all ourselves and fit ourselves.

Our timber window range

We build two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and specifications. Whichever you choose, both are offered in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s original window style.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Dundonald’s period tenements were built with sash windows, sliding vertically in a box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We restore, fix, and build custom sash windows designed to match existing profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic standards in a window that looks exactly as it should.

Here’s the thing: restoring your existing frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the smartest move if the frames are still solid. We always do a full inspection before recommending replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows open outward on hinges, creating a larger opening for fresh air and making cleaning straightforward from inside. They’re the typical choice on Dundonald properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Double glazed as standard.

Timber windows, why they’re the right choice

Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners.

How timber insulates naturally

Did you know timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame width? That means better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.

In Scotland, heating bills are a real challenge. The thermal qualities of a timber frame make a tangible impact to what you spend on heating, and it’s worth bearing in mind.

Timber windows, repair before replace

Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.

Rot in a sill? Remove it and fit fresh timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it goes, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Over the working life of a property, looking after timber windows rather than going for full replacement saves money and cuts material waste. It’s a straightforward calculation.

Sustainability

The timber we select is sourced from ethically managed forests, every piece of it.

Timber is a sustainable resource that stores carbon for its entire lifespan and decomposes cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a petroleum-derived plastic, and aluminium production is extremely energy-intensive.

If the environmental footprint of your home is important to you, timber is clearly the better option. It’s straightforward.

Character and value

Pick up a timber window sash and you notice it, weight, depth, natural grain. No synthetic material can replicate that.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

And they bring tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where period features are part of what makes them the appeal.

Double glazing timber windows

All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, include double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

The sealed unit sits within the timber frame and works with two sheets of glass with a cavity. The result is less heat transfer and better sound insulation.

The timber frame’s natural insulating properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit deliver solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We install glazing bars.

If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This retains the existing frames and lifts performance without a full replacement.

This represents a frequent project on Dundonald’s older properties, where well-constructed original sash windows perform structurally well but single glazing admits cold and road noise.

Every unit we fit meets the latest building regulations governing thermal standards.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland has in excess of 600 designated conservation areas.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council may require replacements matching the original. Material, design, profile.

Having made timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have a strong understanding of council requirements.

We help with consent conditions. We make windows that meet planning condition. Modern standards included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Timber types

We work with two timber types across the entire window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, takes a paint finish well, and holds up in Dundonald’s wet weather with no a problem.

A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood is the answer for both. By nature more wear-resistant, and it takes stains and oils so well.

We advise on the right timber for each project, taking into account the property type, its exposure, and the desired finish.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows do you produce?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Dundonald style, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels for any opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For results, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber is better. It insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Many cases, yes. The current frames are solid, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames remain, character stays, and the thermal and acoustic results improves, without a full replacement.
