If you need timber windows done right in Dunblane, Woodfellas are the right choice. We build, restore, and put in wooden windows out of our Dunblane workshop, working across houses and commercial clients right across Central Scotland.
Each window is custom-built using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and improved security come as standard on every window.
Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a modern extension? A full new set for any property? We produce them all ourselves and put them in ourselves.
Our timber window range
Two types of timber window. Each built for different properties and requirements. Both available in treated pine or hardwood. Both with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Classic sash windows
The traditional Scottish window design.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Dunblane’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were built with sash windows, sliding up and down in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We refurbish, fix, and build custom sash windows. Existing profiles. Existing proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic results.
If your original frames are solid, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the best option. We carry out full surveys before recommending any replacement, so you always know where you are.

Casement window types
Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a wider opening for ventilation and means you can reach them easily from inside. They’re all over Dunblane properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the natural option for rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We make custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one made to measure. Double glazed as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows
Timber has been the go-to window material for centuries. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to households.
Natural insulation
Here’s something that catches out people: timber actually conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness. That means the frame itself is doing better thermal work before you even add the double glazing.
In Scotland, where energy costs are a real issue, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable effect, and that matters over time.
Timber windows, repair before replace
Wear sets in. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.
Got rot in a sill? You remove it and put in new timber. Damaged section of frame? Rebuild. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it breaks, the whole thing goes to landfill and you’re starting over.
Over the lifespan of a property, the capacity to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them means significant savings in both money and waste.
Environmental sustainability
All our timber is procured from sustainably managed forests.
Timber stores carbon and breaks down cleanly, it’s a renewable resource. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive.
If the environmental footprint of your house counts to you, timber is the obvious choice. It’s as simple as that.
Character and property value
The heft, depth, and natural grain of timber windows is what no man-made alternative can match.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also add tangible value to a property, particularly period homes where original or sympathetic features are what attracts buyers.
Double glazed timber windows
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.
The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.
Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a real difference.
The frames are sound, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining what’s worth keeping, lifting performance, no full replacement required.
Regular request on Dunblane’s older properties. Original sash windows: well-constructed. Single glazing: admits cold and road noise.
Every sealed unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland has more than 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council will often require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
Having made timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a thorough understanding of what the council expects.
We can help with consent requirements and make windows that tick every planning condition while giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Timber types
Two timber types, and that’s what we use across all window range.
Most customers pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and handles Dunblane’s wet conditions without any issue.
A natural timber look, extra strength, hardwood is the answer for both. Naturally more resistant to wear, and it accepts stains and oils so well.
Property, exposure, finish, three things we look at before advising on the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.
Timber windows, your questions answered
What types of timber windows do you produce?
We manufacture both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Dunblane style, operating by moving up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in solid condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This preserves the existing frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
