Woodfellas. Dumfries-based timber window experts. We manufacture, renovate, and fit wooden windows from our Dumfries premises, covering houses and commercial properties across Central Scotland.
Every window that we make is built to your exact size from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and improved security come as standard.
Whether you need sash and case windows for a traditional tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a full set of new windows for any kind of property, we build them ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our timber window range
We produce two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Whichever you pick, both are offered in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Traditional sash windows
The classic Scottish window, and still the first choice.
You know what makes sash windows special? They move vertically in a box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the classic window on most of Dumfries’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
The best sash windows look exactly like the original. We refurbish, repair, and build custom ones matching period profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results where it counts.
Here’s the thing: refurbishing your original frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the smartest move if the frames are still sound. We always do a full inspection before recommending any replacement.

Hinged casement windows
Casement windows swing outward on hinges, bigger opening for fresh air, easy access from inside. You’ll see them on Dumfries properties dating from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We produce custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Double glazed as standard.

Why timber works best for windows
Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to households. The record say it all.
Natural heat insulation
Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. The outcome is better thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing comes into it.
In Scotland, where energy costs are a real challenge, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a tangible difference, and that matters over time.
Repair before replace
If a timber window deteriorates, the good news is you can fix it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail, new timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets replaced in section. The story with UPVC is not the same: it can’t be repaired, so when it breaks, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Over the lifespan of a property, the capacity to repair and maintain timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement means significant savings in both money and material waste.
Eco credentials
We procure all our timber from sustainably managed forest, so you can know it’s ethically produced.
Timber locks in carbon and breaks down cleanly, it’s a renewable material. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive.
Your home’s carbon impact is important? Then timber is the obvious choice. It always has been.
Timber windows, character and value
Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, heft, thickness, texture. No man-made material can match that.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.
They add genuine property value too. Especially older properties. Period features count to potential buyers.
Double glazing in timber windows
All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, include double-glazed sealed units included as standard.
Two panes of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and handles the rest, reducing heat transfer, boosting sound insulation.
Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can add those too.
If your older timber windows are still structurally sound but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration. This preserves the existing frames and boosts performance without a full replacement.
Dumfries’s older properties throw up this request all the time. Well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold air and ambient noise like it isn’t there.
Every unit we fit complies with current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings
More than 600 conservation areas across Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.
Where a property sits in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local council authority may require replacements to mirror the original window in material, design, and profile.
Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. The council expectations? We’ve seen them all. We understand what’s expected.
We walk you through consent conditions. We build windows that tick every planning condition. Modern performance guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.
Timber choices
Two timber types. That’s it. We use both for all window product range.
Most people choose treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a paint finish really well, and handles Dumfries’s rain-heavy climate with no issue.
If you prefer a natural timber finish, or if you need something more durable, hardwood is the one, it’s inherently more immune to wear and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
Property. Exposure. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each project.
Timber windows, your questions answered
Which timber window types do you make?
We manufacture both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Dumfries design, operating by sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any opening setup.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For results, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the same frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.
Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in solid condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The outcome is improved thermal and acoustic performance while keeping the original frames and look.
