Timber Windows Dumbarton

Dumbarton has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, restore, and fit wooden windows from our premises, serving homes and business properties across Central Scotland.

Each window is made to measure using ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and enhanced security come as standard on every unit.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a contemporary extension, or a full replacement set for any kind of property, we build them ourselves and fit ourselves.

What wooden windows we make

We make two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s classic window type.

Sash windows slide up and down within a box frame, with a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the historic window type on most of Dumbarton’s period tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

The best sash windows should look exactly like the original. We renovate, sort, and make custom ones replicating existing profiles and proportions, while giving you modern thermal and acoustic results where it counts.

Here’s the thing: restoring your existing frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the most sensible move if the frames are still in good shape. We always do a full inspection before recommending replacement.

Casement window types

Casement windows are hinged and swing out to open, giving a wider opening for fresh air and making access from inside simple. They’re widespread on Dumbarton properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three configurations, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we make is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows section has more information on all listed designs and configurations.

Why timber windows are the right choice

Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that matter to homeowners. The numbers say it all.

Timber’s natural insulation

The frame counts, not just the glass. Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width, giving better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

Scotland. Cold. Costly to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a tangible impact.

Repair not replace

Timber window deteriorates? You can sort it.

Rot in a sill? Remove it, fit fresh timber. Damaged frame part? Rebuild it. UPVC can’t be repaired: it fails, it ends up in landfill, you start again.

Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts cost. Reduces waste.

Sustainability

All timber that goes into our windows is sourced from ethically managed forest.

Locks in carbon as long as it stands, then breaks down cleanly. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is highly carbon-heavy. The contrast is clear.

Your property’s carbon impact matters to you? Then timber is the clear choice. It always has been.

Timber windows, character and value

The weight, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is something no synthetic alternative can copy.

On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

Timber windows also bring tangible value to a property, particularly period homes where period features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we produce has double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always has been.

The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame: it’s two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which reduces heat transfer and boosts sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s inherent thermal characteristics with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can install those too.

Where older timber windows remain in sound condition but single glazed, we can often convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames and improving performance without needing a full replacement.

This is a frequent project on Dumbarton’s older properties. The original sash windows are solid, but the single glazing admits cold air and road noise, and converting to double glazing addresses both.

Every unit we fit: complies with current building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows in conservation areas

Scotland contains over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an approved window material. Your local council will often require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we know what the council requires, no surprises.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern standards, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.

Timber types

Two timber types. That’s what we work with across the entire window range.

The most requested choice is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and performs reliably in Dumbarton’s wet climate.

A natural timber finish, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood answers both. By nature more resistant to wear, and it accepts stains and oils so well.

Not sure which timber to choose? We advise on the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you want.

Timber windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows do you produce?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Dumbarton design, moving vertically in a timber box frame. Casements: hinged, swing out. Fixed panels made too, for any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For performance, lifespan, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed not fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and highly favoured in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That retains the original frames and character while boosting thermal and acoustic results.
