Custom-built, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, enhanced security. Every window that leaves our workshop is made to the same standard. No shortcuts.
Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a contemporary extension? A full replacement set for any property? We produce them all in-house and fit ourselves.
Our wooden window range
We manufacture two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.
Slide vertically. Timber box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Drongan’s period tenements and the only replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We restore, repair, and build custom sash windows that nail the period profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic standards.
A lot of the time, restoring the original frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the smarter call if the frames themselves are still solid. We always do a full assessment before recommending full replacement.

Hinged windows
Casement windows swing outward on hinges, creating a wider opening for airflow and making cleaning simple from inside. They’re the common choice on Drongan properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, three arrangements, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we build is built to order and fitted with double glazing as standard.
For more on options and configurations, our timber casement windows section has everything you need.
Why choose timber for your windows
Timber’s long-standing position as the go-to window material is not just a question of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to property owners.
Natural insulation
Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. The outcome is stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing factors in.
Scotland depends on central heating. A timber frame’s insulating properties make a measurable effect to what you pay, and that saving adds up over time.
Repair, don’t replace
If a timber window gets damaged, the good news is you can fix it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be removed and new timber put in its stead. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such option: when it deteriorates, the whole unit ends up in landfill and the process starts again.
Over the lifetime of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than having to replace them saves real cost and reduces waste.
Eco credentials
We get all our timber from ethically managed woodland, so you can rest easy it’s ethically produced.
Timber: sustainable. Locks in carbon. Breaks down naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium manufacturing: extremely carbon-heavy.
If the carbon impact of your property matters to you, timber is obviously the better option. It’s not complicated.
Timber windows, character and value
There’s a weight, a depth, and a texture to timber windows that man-made materials just can’t replicate.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows create an visual rightness that UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also contribute genuine value to a property, particularly period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.
Double glazed wooden windows
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.
Two sheets of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and handles the rest, cutting heat transfer, improving sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the natural thermal qualities of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement.
For properties that call for a traditional divided-light look, we can install glazing bars as part of the installation.
The frames are sound, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining what’s worth keeping, improving performance, no full replacement required.
Common on Drongan’s older properties. Existing sash windows: well-built. Single glazing: admits cold and road noise.
Every unit we fit meets current building regulations governing thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one affects what you can do with your windows.
If your property is in one of these areas, you need to know that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council will often require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.
We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland for over 20 years, so we know exactly what the council requires, nothing new to us.
We can advise on consent requirements and make windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.
Timber choices
Two timber types, and that’s what we use across the entire window range.
The most common option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and performs well in Drongan’s damp conditions.
Want a natural timber finish or need extra strength? Hardwood is the answer, naturally more immune to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
Property. Exposure level. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each job.
Wooden windows, frequently asked questions
Which wooden window types do you make?
We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Drongan design, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels for any opening configuration.
Is timber a better choice than UPVC?
For performance, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be fixed not fully replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and highly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in good condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That preserves the original frames and appearance while lifting thermal and acoustic results.
