Woodfellas are Doune’s established timber window specialists, building, restoring, and fitting timber windows from a Doune base that serves homes and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window we produce is built to order from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security installed as standard.
Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete new set: we build ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our range of timber windows
We produce two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and specifications. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window design.
Sash windows move vertically within a timber box frame, via a system of weighted cords and pulleys. They represent the historic window type on most of Doune’s period tenements, and they’re the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, repairing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the period profiles and proportions, while still delivering modern thermal and acoustic results.
If your original frames are solid, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the best option. We do full inspections before recommending any replacement, so you always know where you stand.

Casement windows
Casement windows swing outward on hinges, larger opening for airflow, easy cleaning from inside. You’ll spot them across Doune properties dating from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed arrangements, so whatever style you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and fitted with double glazing as standard.
Our timber casement windows page has more detail on all listed styles and configurations.
Why timber makes sense for windows
There’s a reason people have been installing timber windows in houses for centuries, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to homeowners.
Natural insulating qualities
Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. This gives you stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.
Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a real effect.
Repair, don’t replace
Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be excised and new timber put in its place. A damaged portion of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such alternative: when it deteriorates, the entire unit goes to landfill and the process starts again.
Think about it: over the life of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious money and cuts a lot of material waste.
Timber and sustainability
The timber we use is sourced from ethically managed forest, every length of it.
Timber is a replenishable material that sequesters carbon for its entire lifespan and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-based plastic, and aluminium production is extremely energy-intensive.
Your property’s carbon impact is important? Then timber is the clear option. It always has been.
The character and value of timber windows
Timber windows have a heft, a feel, and a natural grain that no synthetic alternative can match.
On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way that UPVC never quite manages.
And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the attraction.
Double glazing in timber windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we make come with double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always fitted.
The sealed unit fits within the timber frame and works with two layers of glass with a sealed cavity. The result is lower heat transfer and better sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they deliver solid thermal and acoustic performance across both types, sash or casement, same standard.
We can also fit glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light look.
The frames are solid, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can switch to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving what’s worth saving, improving performance, no full replacement needed.
Regular request on Doune’s older properties. Original sash windows: well-built. Single glazing: lets in cold and street noise.
Every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations governing thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Scotland: more than 600 designated conservation areas.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council will likely require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council expectations? We’ve been through all of it. We know what’s expected.
We can help with consent conditions and produce windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.
Our timber types
Two timber types, and that’s what we work with across all window product range.
Treated pine is the most chosen choice, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and performs well in Doune’s rain-heavy weather.
Want a natural timber finish? Need extra strength? Hardwood. Naturally more resistant to deterioration. Takes stains and oils beautifully.
Property. Exposure. Finish. We help you choose the right timber for each project.
Timber windows FAQ
What kinds of timber windows do you offer?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Doune design, moving up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels for any opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
Three things: results, longevity, appearance. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the equivalent frame width. Significantly longer lifespan when looked after. Repairable, not replaced. And it’s the sole material permitted for listed buildings, strongly preferred in conservation areas too.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This retains the original frames and appearance while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
