Timber Windows Dollar

Dollar has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We make, restore, and fit wooden windows from our premises, working across homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window that we produce is built to your exact size from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard.

Tenements need sash and case, modern extensions want casement, and some properties need a full new set. Whatever the property type, we build in-house and fit ourselves. No middlemen.

Wooden windows we make

We manufacture two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and specifications. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

The traditional Scottish window style.

Move vertically. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Dollar’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, sort, and build custom sash windows that replicate existing profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic results.

The existing frames are sound, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the smarter route. We carry out full surveys first, before we recommend going further.

Casement windows

Hinged. Swing outward to open. Bigger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Standard on Dollar properties built from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever style you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page has more detail on all listed designs and configurations.

Wood windows, why they’re the right choice

Timber has been the go-to window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to property owners.

Natural thermal performance

Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. Stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

Scotland. Cold. Costly to heat. A timber frame’s insulating characteristics make a real difference.

Timber windows, repair before replace

Timber window damaged? You can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be taken out and fresh timber spliced in. A damaged part of frame can be repaired. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit goes to landfill and you start again.

Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than going for full replacement saves serious money and reduces a lot of waste.

Timber and the environment

We procure all our timber from ethically managed forests, so you can know it’s ethically produced.

Timber: renewable. Locks in carbon. Biodegrades naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium manufacturing: highly carbon-heavy.

If you care about the carbon impact of your house, timber is the obvious choice.

The character and value of timber windows

Timber windows have a weight, character, and grain that no man-made material can replicate.

On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

Timber windows also add real value to a property, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features constitute part of the property’s appeal.

Double glazing timber windows

Every window we manufacture, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two layers of glass with a cavity between them, cutting heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural thermal properties with double glazing and you get excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real difference.

Where older timber windows are in sound condition but only single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the existing frames and boosting thermal performance without needing a full replacement.

Dollar’s older properties throw up this request all the time. Well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and road noise like it isn’t there.

Every unit we install: meets current building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows in listed buildings and conservation areas

There are more than 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant number.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC isn’t an approved window material, and your local council might well insist on replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Having made timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a thorough understanding of what the council expects.

We can advise on consent conditions and make windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Timber types we use

Woodfellas works with two types of timber for its entire window range.

Treated pine is the most chosen option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up reliably in Dollar’s rain-heavy weather.

If a natural timber look is preferred, or if extra strength is called for, hardwood is the choice. It’s by nature more resistant to wear and takes stains and oils very well.

We help you choose the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you need. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

We manufacture sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Dollar design, sliding up and down in a box frame. Casements: hinged, swing outward. Fixed panels made too, for any opening configuration.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

Yes, for performance, longevity, and appearance, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This preserves the existing frames and character while improving thermal and acoustic standards.
