Timber Windows Denny

Woodfellas are Denny’s leading timber window specialists, building, restoring, and installing timber windows from a Denny premises that serves residential properties and business properties across Central Scotland.

Not a single window we produce without being built to order. Responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and improved security, all standard.

Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete new set. Whatever the project, we build ourselves and put them in ourselves. No middlemen.

Our timber window range

Two types. Two sets of requirements. We produce one for older properties, one for modern ones, but both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The original Scottish window, and still the first choice.

Sash windows slide vertically within a timber box frame, via a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They are the standard window type on most of Denny’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, fix, and produce custom sash windows. Existing profiles. Existing proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

If your existing frames are solid, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the best call. We carry out full inspections before recommending any replacement, so you know exactly where you are.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Opens out, lets in more ventilation, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became the norm on Denny properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all listed designs and choices in full detail.

Why timber makes sense for windows

Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that matter to households.

Natural thermal performance

Did you know timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame width? That means superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before you even add the double glazing.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a real difference to what you spend.

Repair, don’t replace

Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.

Rot in a sill, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets rebuilt. The story with UPVC is not the same: it can’t be repaired, so when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Year after year, maintain rather than replace. Over the lifetime of a property, that means real cost not spent and a lot less material going to landfill.

Sustainability

We source all our timber from ethically managed forests, so you can be sure it’s ethically produced.

Timber is a renewable resource that sequesters carbon for its entire life and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment is important to you.

For those for whom the environmental impact of their house is a priority, timber is the obvious option.

Appeal and property value

There’s a heft, a depth, and a texture to timber windows that artificial materials just can’t match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth noting if aesthetics count to you.

Value, too. On period homes, where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them special, timber windows add tangible value that UPVC can’t match.

Double glazed timber windows

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

Two panes of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and handles the rest, cutting heat transfer, boosting sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural thermal properties with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.

We can also add glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light look.

If your older timber windows are still solid but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the original frames and boosts performance without a full replacement.

It happens a lot on Denny’s older properties, existing sash windows that are solid, but the single glazing admits cold and street noise like it’s not even there.

And every unit we fit complies with current building regulations for thermal performance, so no worries there.

Conservation area timber windows

There are over 600 conservation areas across Scotland, quite a number.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an approved window material, and your local council may well insist on replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a solid understanding of what the council expects.

We can help with consent requirements and make windows that tick every planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Timber types

Woodfellas uses two types of timber for its full window product range.

Treated pine is the most chosen option, and for good reasons. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and works reliably in Denny’s damp weather.

If you want a natural timber finish, or if you need something extra durable, hardwood is the one, it’s by nature more resistant to damage and it takes stains and oils really well.

We advise on the right timber for each project, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you want. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.

Timber windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows do you make?

We produce both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Denny design, operating by sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels to suit any opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

Yes, for performance, longevity, and appearance, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are solid, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames stay, character stays, and the thermal and acoustic results improves, without a full replacement.
