Timber Windows Dennistoun

Woodfellas are the timber window team operating from Dennistoun. We build, refurbish, and fit timber windows from our Dennistoun base, working across both residential properties and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.

Built to order, ethically sourced timber, double glazing, improved security. Every window we produce is built the same way. No shortcuts.

Tenements need sash and case, newer extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete replacement set. Whatever the property type, we make in-house and put them in ourselves. No middlemen.

Wooden windows we make

We produce two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Whichever you choose, both are available in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

Scotland’s classic window design.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Dennistoun’s period tenements were built with sash windows, sliding up and down in a timber box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, fix, and build custom sash windows built to match existing profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that looks exactly as it should.

Restoration often covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest option where original frames are in good condition. We inspect fully before recommending replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they open outward to open, which gives you a bigger opening for fresh air and means you can clean them easily from inside. They’re standard on Dennistoun properties built from the 1920s on, and they’re the standard option for rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber is the right call

Timber’s centuries-long position as the first-choice window material is not just a matter of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to households.

Natural insulating qualities

Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. Stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.

Scotland depends on heating bills. A timber frame’s insulating properties make a real effect to what you pay, and that difference adds up over the years.

Repair it, don’t replace it

Timber window deteriorates? Good news: you can sort it.

Rot in a sill? Take it out, splice in new timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it breaks, it ends up in landfill, you start again.

Year after year, repair and maintain rather than replace. Over the lifespan of a property, that means real cost saved and a lot less material going to landfill.

The sustainable option

All our timber is sourced from ethically managed forests.

Timber is a natural resource, it holds carbon as it works and breaks down naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a huge amount of energy.

For homeowners for whom the carbon footprint of their house is a consideration, timber is the obvious choice.

The appeal and value of timber windows

There’s a weight, a feel, and a natural grain to timber windows that man-made materials just can’t replicate.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if the look matter to you.

They bring real property value too. Especially older properties. Period features matter to buyers.

Double glazed timber windows

Every window we make, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons required.

The sealed unit fits within the timber frame, employing two sheets of glass separated by a sealed cavity to limit heat transfer and lift sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they deliver strong thermal and acoustic performance across both types, sash or casement, same result.

We can also install glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light look.

Older frames. Single glazing only. Still solid? We can in many cases convert to double glazing as part of a restoration. Original frames are preserved. Performance gets better. No full replacement.

It’s a very regular job on Dennistoun’s older properties, well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and street noise. Easily fixed.

Every unit we put in: satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland has more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one changes what you can do with your windows.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will often require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.

Over 20 years making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We understand what the council expects.

We can walk you through consent requirements and manufacture windows meeting every planning condition while achieving modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the applicable regulations in more detail.

Types of timber we use

We work with two timber types across the entire window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is the most chosen option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and holds up well in Dennistoun’s rain-heavy weather.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra durability? Hardwood is the answer, inherently more immune to damage, and it accepts stains and oils so well.

We’ll tell you which timber is best for your job based on the property, the exposure, and what look you’re after.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Dennistoun style, sliding up and down in a box frame. Casements: hinged, open out. Fixed panels made too, for any window opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

On performance, longevity, and looks: yes. Timber insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is improved thermal and acoustic performance while keeping the existing frames and look.
