Woodfellas are the timber window experts working out of Dalton. We build, refurbish, and put in timber windows from our Dalton premises, serving both houses and business properties throughout Central Scotland.
Not a single window we produce without being built to order. Responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and improved security, all standard.
Whether you need sash and case windows for a traditional tenement, casement windows for a contemporary extension, or a full set of replacement windows for any type of property, we make them ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our wooden window options
We produce two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window design.
You know what makes sash windows special? They move vertically in a timber box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. They’re the standard window on most of Dalton’s period tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, sort, and make custom sash windows that nail the period profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards.
Restoration typically includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the best option where the original frames are sound. We carry out full assessments before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows are the hinged type: they swing outward to open, which gives you a larger opening for ventilation and means you can clean them without trouble from inside. They’re standard on Dalton properties built from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual choice for extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Just like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.

Why choose timber for your windows
Timber’s historic position as the preferred window material is not simply a question of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners.
Natural thermal insulation
Here’s something that trips up people: timber actually transfers heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame thickness. That means the frame itself is already doing more thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.
In Scotland, where energy costs are a real issue, the thermal qualities of a timber frame make a genuine difference, and that matters over time.
Repair, don’t replace
Timber window damaged? You can repair it.
Rot in a sill can be excised and fresh timber fitted in its stead. A damaged section of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC offers no such alternative: when it deteriorates, the whole unit ends up in landfill and everything starts again.
Over a property’s lifetime: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts cost. Reduces material waste.
Environmental sustainability
We get all our timber from responsibly managed woodland, so you can rest easy it’s ethically produced.
Timber is a natural resource that stores carbon for its entire life and biodegrades cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.
If the environmental footprint of your house matters to you, timber is the obvious option. It’s as simple as that.
The character and value of timber windows
There’s a heft, a feel, and a natural grain to timber windows that synthetic materials just can’t match.
On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows achieve an aesthetic fit that UPVC never quite manages.
They contribute genuine property value too. Especially period homes. Original or sympathetic features matter to potential buyers.
Double glazing in timber windows
Every window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always.
The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame: it’s two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which reduces heat transfer and boosts sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the natural insulating characteristics of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement.
Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real visual difference.
The frames are solid, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can switch to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping what’s worth saving, improving thermal performance, no full replacement needed.
Common on Dalton’s older properties. Existing sash windows: solid. Single glazing: allows in cold air and road noise.
Every unit we fit meets current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings
Scotland has in excess of 600 officially recognised conservation areas.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not permitted. Council will often require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.
We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland for over 20 years, so we understand what the council expects, nothing new to us.
We can advise on consent requirements and build windows that meet every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth if you want to read up.
Timber options
Two timber types. That’s it. We stock both for all window product range.
Treated pine represents the most frequently chosen option. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish readily, and holds up well in Dalton’s wet weather.
For properties where a natural timber look is wanted, or where added durability is called for, we stock hardwood, which is inherently more immune to wear and takes stains and oils with excellent results.
We advise on the right timber for each project, based on the property, its exposure level, and the finish you want. Just ask and we’ll steer you right.
Timber windows FAQ
What timber windows can you make?
We manufacture sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Dalton design, sliding vertically in a box frame. Casements: hinged, swing outward. Fixed panels made too, for any window opening setup.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
On performance, longevity, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That keeps the original frames and appearance while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
