Timber Windows Dalry

Woodfellas are the timber window experts based in Dalry. We make, renovate, and fit timber windows from our Dalry base, serving both residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window we make is built to order from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security included as standard.

Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a full replacement set. Whatever the project, we produce ourselves and install ourselves. No middlemen.

Our timber window range

Two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

The traditional window type for Scottish properties.

Sash windows work on a pretty clever system: they slide up and down in a timber box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. You’ll spot them on most of Dalry’s period tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the required replacement where sash and case was the original design.

Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, sorting, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that mirror the period profiles and proportions, while still giving you modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Restoration typically includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest route where the original frames are solid. We do full assessments before recommending replacement.

Hinged windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they swing out to open, which gives you a wider opening for ventilation and means you can reach them easily from inside. They’re standard on Dalry properties built from the 1920s on, and they’re the standard choice for rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations, so whatever setup you need, we can do it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

All the designs, all the options, it’s on our timber casement windows page.

Why choose timber for your windows

There’s a good reason people have been fitting timber windows in properties for centuries, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to property owners.

How timber insulates naturally

Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. This means superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even added.

Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a tangible impact.

Repair, don’t replace

Timber window deteriorates? You can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Take it out, fit fresh timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it fails, it ends up in landfill, you start again.

Over the working life of a property, looking after timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts money and reduces waste. It’s a straightforward calculation.

Eco performance

The timber we use is sourced from responsibly managed woodland, every piece of it.

Timber: natural. Holds carbon. Breaks down naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium manufacturing: highly carbon-heavy.

For those for whom the carbon footprint of their house is a priority, timber is the clear choice.

Character and value

There’s a heft, a character, and a texture to timber windows that synthetic materials simply can’t match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows look right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if the look count to you.

And they add genuine value to a property too, especially older properties where period features are part of the attraction.

Double glazing in timber windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that leaves our workshop includes double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always has.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame, two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and lifting sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Traditional divided-light appearance? We can add glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a real visual difference.

If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration. This preserves the existing frames and lifts performance without a full replacement.

Dalry’s older properties bring up this situation all the time. Well-built original sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold and street noise like there’s nothing there.

Every unit we install meets current building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland: over 600 designated conservation areas.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a solid understanding of what the council expects.

We can help with consent requirements and produce windows that meet planning condition while giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Timber types

Two timber types. That’s it. We use both for all window product range.

Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and handles Dalry’s wet climate without a problem.

If a natural timber finish is preferred, or if extra durability is required, hardwood is the option. It’s by nature more resistant to wear and accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to choose? We recommend the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you have in mind.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows can you make?

We make two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Dalry style, moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any opening setup.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For results, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are solid, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay, appearance is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic results improves, without a full replacement.
