Timber Windows Cumnock

Woodfellas are Cumnock’s established timber window specialists, building, refurbishing, and installing wooden windows from a Cumnock base that works across houses and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Each window is custom-built using ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and improved security are fitted as standard on every window.

Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a contemporary extension? A complete replacement set for any property? We make them all in-house and fit ourselves.

Our timber window range

We produce two primary types of timber window, one suited to older properties, one right for newer ones. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

The traditional window type for Scottish properties.

Sash windows work on a clever system: they move up and down in a timber box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. You’ll see them on most of Cumnock’s period tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the required replacement where sash and case was the original design.

We restore, repair, and build custom sash windows that replicate existing profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance.

A lot of the time, renovating the original frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better option if the frames themselves are still in good shape. We do a full inspection before recommending a replacement.

Hinged casement windows

The hinged window. Swings out, lets in more ventilation, easy to reach from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became standard on Cumnock properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Just like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.

Our timber casement windows page covers all available designs and options in complete detail.

Why timber is the right choice

Timber’s long-standing position as the preferred window material is not simply a matter of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that count to property owners.

How timber insulates naturally

Here’s something that surprises people: timber actually transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame width. That means the frame itself is doing stronger thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

In a climate like Scotland, where energy bills represent a real concern for homeowners, the thermal properties of a timber frame make a real effect.

Repair, don’t replace

Where damage develops in a timber window, repair remains a practical choice.

Rot in a sill can be removed and new timber spliced in its stead. A damaged part of frame can be repaired and restored. UPVC offers no such option: when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and everything starts again.

Over the working life of a property, repairing and maintaining timber windows rather than replacing them cuts cost and reduces waste. It’s a simple calculation.

Timber and the environment

We source all our timber from sustainably managed woodland, so you can rest easy it’s ethically produced.

Timber locks in carbon and decomposes cleanly, it’s a natural resource. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy.

Your home’s environmental impact is important? Then timber is the clear choice. It always has been.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Timber windows have a substance, physical depth, and natural grain that no artificial material can match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

And they bring genuine value to a property, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are what buyers look for.

Double glazing in timber windows

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame, two sheets of glass with a cavity between them, cutting heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.

Put that double glazing together with the natural insulating qualities of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We install glazing bars.

Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In many cases we can switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the existing frames and improving thermal performance without a full replacement.

This is a frequent job on Cumnock’s older properties, where solidly built existing sash windows are well-built but single glazing admits cold air and ambient noise.

Every unit we fit meets the latest building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

In a conservation area? UPVC is not an approved window material, and your local council may require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council expectations? We’ve seen them all. We know what’s expected.

We can walk you through consent requirements and produce windows that tick every planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.

Wood options

Across all our window products, we work with two types of timber.

Treated pine: most requested choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Takes a painted finish well. Performs reliably in Cumnock’s wet conditions.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra durability? Hardwood is the answer, inherently more immune to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to pick? We advise on the right option for each project based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you want.

Timber windows, frequently asked questions

What types of timber windows do you make?

We manufacture both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Cumnock style, operating by sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

On every fronts, performance, longevity, and looks, yes, timber is the superior choice. It insulates more effectively at equivalent frame widths, lasts a lot longer when properly maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Upgrading single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in good condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This retains the existing frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
