If you need timber windows done right in Cumbernauld, Woodfellas are the ones to call. We make, renovate, and install wooden windows out of our Cumbernauld premises, working across homes and commercial clients throughout Central Scotland.
Every window we make is custom-built from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and enhanced security installed as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a contemporary extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we make them all in-house and put them in ourselves.
Our wooden window options
We make two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and specifications. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional Scottish window style.
Sash windows operate by sliding up and down within a box frame, via a system of weighted cords and pulleys. They are the standard window type on most of Cumbernauld’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We restore, sort, and make custom sash windows built to match original profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that fits right in.
The original frames are in good shape, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the smarter call. We complete full surveys first, before we ever recommend replacement.

Hinged windows
The hinged window. Opens out, lets in more ventilation, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became standard on Cumbernauld properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber windows are the right choice
Generations of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to homeowners. The record say it all.
Natural insulation
Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. This gives you stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.
In Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge, the thermal qualities of a timber frame make a genuine difference, and that adds up over time.
Repair, not replace
The key thing about timber windows is that if something goes wrong, you can repair it.
Rot in a sill can be excised and new timber fitted in its place. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such route: when it deteriorates, the entire unit goes to landfill and the process starts again.
Over the life of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than replacing them cuts real money and cuts down on waste.
Sustainability
We get all our timber from responsibly managed forest, so you can rest easy it’s responsibly produced.
Timber: natural. Stores carbon. Decomposes naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: extremely carbon-heavy.
If the carbon footprint of your home matters to you, timber is obviously the better choice. It’s straightforward.
Character and value
Timber windows have a substance, a depth, and a texture that no artificial alternative can match.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC never quite manages.
They contribute real property value too. Especially period homes. Period features count to potential buyers.
Double glazing timber windows
Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we make has double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always has.
The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame, two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and lifting sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the natural thermal characteristics of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement.
For properties that call for a traditional divided-light appearance, we can install glazing bars as part of the installation.
Where older timber windows are solid but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the existing frames and boosting thermal performance without needing a full replacement.
This represents a regular job on Cumbernauld’s older properties, where well-constructed existing sash windows are well-built but single glazing admits cold air and road noise.
And every unit we put in satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards, so you’re covered.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.
Where a property sits in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local council authority will often require replacements to replicate the existing window in material, design, and profile.
We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland for over 20 years, so we understand what the council requires, nothing new to us.
We can help with consent requirements and produce windows that tick every planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.
Types of timber we use
Woodfellas works with two types of timber for its entire window range.
Treated pine is the most popular option. It is pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and performs well in Cumbernauld’s wet conditions.
Want a natural timber finish or need extra strength? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more immune to wear, and it takes stains and oils so well.
We’ll recommend which timber is most appropriate for your project based on the property, the exposure level, and what look you’re after.
Common questions about timber windows
What types of timber windows do you produce?
We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Cumbernauld design, moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows open out. We also produce fixed window panels for any opening setup.
Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?
On every fronts, thermal performance, longevity, and looks, yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the same frame widths, lasts significantly longer when properly maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?
In most cases, yes. Good current frames? We upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, thermal and acoustic results gets better.
