Timber Windows Culmore

Woodfellas. Culmore-based timber window experts. We make, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our Culmore base, serving homes and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window is built to order. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and improved security as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a newer extension, or a full new set for any type of property, we produce them ourselves and install ourselves.

What timber windows we make

We produce two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and requirements. Whichever you pick, both are made in treated pine or hardwood and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

The traditional window design for Scottish properties.

Move vertically. Timber box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Culmore’s period tenements and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, sort, and build custom sash windows. Original profiles. Existing proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

The original frames are solid, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible option. We complete full assessments first, before we recommend replacement.

Hinged windows

Hinged. Open out to open. Larger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Common on Culmore properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all available options and choices in full detail.

Why timber windows are the right choice

Timber’s centuries-long position as the first-choice window material is not simply a matter of tradition. It genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to property owners.

Natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. This translates to stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even factored in.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a real impact to what you spend, and that difference adds up over time.

Repair, don’t replace

Timber window deteriorates? You can sort it.

Got rot in a sill? You cut it out and splice in new timber. Damaged section of frame? Rebuild. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it fails, the entire thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting again.

Think about it: over the life of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them saves serious cost and reduces a lot of material waste.

Environmental credentials

The timber we work with is sourced from responsibly managed forests, every piece of it.

Timber is a natural resource, it locks in carbon as it stands and biodegrades naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a significant amount of energy.

Concerned about your home’s carbon impact? Timber. Obvious option.

Character and property value

The substance, character, and natural texture of timber windows is what no artificial material can copy.

Sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC never quite manages.

And they contribute real value to a property, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

Every window we build, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted. No add-ons required.

Two layers of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and manages the rest, reducing heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.

Combined with the natural thermal properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves strong thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement types.

If your property needs a traditional divided-light appearance, we can install glazing bars, just ask.

Where older timber windows remain in sound condition but only single glazed, we can often upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the original frames and boosting performance without needing a full replacement.

Culmore’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Well-built original sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold and road noise like it isn’t there.

And every unit we fit satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so you’re covered.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland: over 600 designated conservation areas.

Conservation area, and your windows need replacing? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council may require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.

Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we understand what the council requires.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.

Wood choices

We stock two timber types across all window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is the most chosen choice, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and performs well in Culmore’s wet weather.

If you prefer a natural timber finish, or if you need something extra durable, hardwood is the answer, it’s inherently more immune to damage and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure. Finish. We help you choose the right timber for each job.

Common questions about timber windows

Which timber window types do you manufacture?

Sash and case is the traditional Culmore style, moving vertically in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open out, that’s the other. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood. And we make fixed window panels too, for any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For performance, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber is better. It insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?

Many cases, yes. The current frames are good, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames stay, appearance is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic results improves, without a full replacement.
