Timber Windows Clydebank

Woodfellas. Clydebank-based timber window specialists. We build, renovate, and install timber windows from our Clydebank workshop, covering houses and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window that leaves our workshop is made to measure from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and improved security are included as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete new set: we produce ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our wooden window options

We build two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and specifications. Whichever you pick, both are made in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash window types

Scotland’s original window style.

You know what makes sash windows special? They move up and down in a box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. They’re the standard window on most of Clydebank’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

Whether your sash windows need refurbishing, fixing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that match the existing profiles and proportions, while still giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.

Here’s the thing: restoring your existing frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the most sensible move if the frames are still in good shape. We always do a full assessment before recommending any replacement.

Hinged casement windows

Casement windows open out on hinges, creating a bigger opening for fresh air and making cleaning straightforward from inside. They’re the standard option on Clydebank properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we produce custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

For more on options and options, our timber casement windows page has all the detail you need.

Why timber is the right choice

Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to homeowners.

Natural thermal insulation

The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame width, giving stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

In a country like Scotland, where heating costs are a real issue for homeowners, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable impact.

Repair, don’t replace

Timber window deteriorates? You can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Remove it and fit fresh timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it goes, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re back to square one.

Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious money and reduces a lot of waste.

Eco performance

We get all our timber from ethically managed forests, so you can know it’s responsibly produced.

Timber is a natural resource that stores carbon for its entire life and decomposes naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic based on oil, and aluminium production is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.

If the carbon impact of your property is important to you, timber is clearly the better choice. It’s straightforward.

Character and appeal

The substance, character, and natural texture of timber windows is what no man-made material can copy.

Sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they belong. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly wrong, it never quite manages that same fit.

And they contribute genuine value to a property too, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the attraction.

Double glazing in wooden windows

All windows manufactured by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.

The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame: it’s two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which cuts down on heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.

The timber frame’s natural thermal properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.

Traditional divided-light look? We can fit glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a real difference.

Still solid but single glazed? We can in many cases switch to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames, improving performance, and avoiding a full replacement.

This is a frequent request on Clydebank’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing admits cold and road noise, and upgrading to double glazing addresses both.

Every unit we install meets the latest building regulations for thermal performance. That’s guaranteed.

Listed buildings timber windows

Scotland has more than 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

Where a property falls within one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local planning authority will often require replacements to replicate the existing design in material, design, and profile.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a strong understanding of council requirements.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we cover all of it. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.

Timber types

We stock two timber types across the entire window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine is the most chosen choice, and for good reasons. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and performs reliably in Clydebank’s rain-heavy conditions.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra strength? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more immune to deterioration, and it takes stains and oils so well.

Property. Exposure level. Finish. We help you choose the right timber for each project.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows can you make?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Clydebank style, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open out. We also make fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.

Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?

Yes, for results, lifespan, and appearance, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.

Replacing single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in good condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That preserves the existing frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic results.
