Timber Windows Clifton

Clifton has its own timber window specialists and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, renovate, and put in wooden windows from our workshop, covering homes and business properties all over Central Scotland.

Every window we build is made to measure from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security included as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full new set: we produce ourselves and install ourselves.

Our timber window range

Two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

The traditional Scottish window, and it has never changed.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Clifton’s period tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding vertically in a timber box frame on cords and counterbalance weights. They’re still the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, repair, and make custom sash windows designed to match period profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic performance in a window that looks exactly as it should.

Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the most sensible option where the original frames are in good condition. We do full inspections before recommending replacement.

Casement window types

Hinged. Open out to open. Bigger opening, easier access from inside. Common on Clifton properties built from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed arrangements, so whatever configuration you need, we can make it. And like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all available options and configurations in complete detail.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

Hundreds of years of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners. The numbers say it all.

Natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. Better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.

In a place like Scotland, where heating bills are a real challenge for homeowners, the insulating properties of a timber frame make a real impact.

Repair it, don’t replace it

If a timber window deteriorates, the good news is you can fix it.

Rot in a sill, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets rebuilt. The story with UPVC is different: no repair option, so when it breaks, the whole unit goes to landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Over the life of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them cuts real money and cuts down on material waste.

Environmental sustainability

All timber that goes into our windows is obtained from sustainably managed forest.

Timber: renewable. Stores carbon. Decomposes cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: extremely energy-intensive.

For people for whom the environmental footprint of their house is a consideration, timber represents the obvious choice.

Character and appeal

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, weight, thickness, natural grain. No synthetic material can match that.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way UPVC never quite manages.

And they bring genuine value to a property too, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazed wooden windows

Every window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units fitted. No add-ons required.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame: it’s two panes of glass with a cavity between them, which cuts down on heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both styles, sash or casement, same result.

For properties that need a traditional divided-light appearance, we can install glazing bars as an addition.

Older frames. Single glazing only. Still structurally sound? We can in many cases convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Original frames stay. Thermal performance gets better. No full replacement.

It comes up a lot on Clifton’s older properties, original sash windows that are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold and road noise like it’s not even there.

Every unit we put in complies with current building regulations governing thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland: over 600 recognised conservation areas.

Where a property sits in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local council authority will often require replacements to replicate the original design in material, design, and profile.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have a thorough understanding of council requirements.

We advise on consent requirements. We make windows that tick every planning condition. Modern performance guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Types of timber we use

Woodfellas stocks two types of timber for its entire window range.

The most popular option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and performs reliably in Clifton’s wet conditions.

Want a natural timber finish? Need extra durability? Hardwood. By nature more immune to damage. Accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We’ll recommend which timber is right for your project based on the property, the exposure level, and what look you’re after.

Timber windows FAQ

Which wooden window types do you manufacture?

We manufacture two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Clifton design, sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

On every counts, thermal performance, longevity, and appearance, yes, timber is the superior choice. It insulates more effectively at the same frame thicknesses, lasts significantly longer when regularly maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage happens. Timber is also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the original frames and appearance while lifting thermal and acoustic standards.
