Woodfellas are Clarkston’s foremost timber window makers, manufacturing, renovating, and putting in wooden windows from a Clarkston workshop that covers homes and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window that we make is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and enhanced security are included as standard.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a complete replacement set for any sort of property, we build them ourselves and put them in ourselves.
Our timber window range
Two types. Two different requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s classic window type.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Clarkston’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding vertically in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, sort, and produce custom sash windows. Original profiles. Existing proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic results.
Here’s the thing: refurbishing your existing frames with draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades is often the best option if the frames are still solid. We always do a full survey before suggesting any replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and open out to open, creating a bigger opening for airflow and making cleaning from inside simple. They’re common on Clarkston properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever configuration you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and double glazed as standard.

Why choose timber for your windows
Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter to households.
Timber’s insulating qualities
Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. Superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a tangible difference to what you pay.
Repair not replace
If a timber window is damaged, the good news is you can sort it.
Rot in a sill can be removed and new timber spliced in. A damaged section of frame can be repaired. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit goes to landfill and you start over.
Over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than having to replace them cuts real cost and reduces waste.
Sustainability
All our timber is procured from ethically managed forests.
Timber: renewable. Locks in carbon. Breaks down cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: extremely energy-intensive.
If the carbon impact of your house matters to you, timber is clearly the better choice. It’s not complicated.
Appeal and property value
There’s a weight, a depth, and a natural grain to timber windows that man-made materials just can’t replicate.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they fit. Put UPVC in and something’s slightly wrong, it just can’t that same rightness.
And they contribute real value to a property too, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the attraction.
Double glazed timber windows
All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units included as standard.
The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame: it’s two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which cuts down on heat transfer and boosts sound insulation.
Combined with the inherent insulating qualities of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement types.
Traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real difference.
The frames are sound, they’re just single glazed. In many cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving what’s worth saving, lifting thermal performance, no full replacement needed.
Common on Clarkston’s older properties. Original sash windows: well-constructed. Single glazing: allows in cold air and street noise.
Every unit we put in satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.
Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an permitted material, your local council will often require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.
We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We know what the council requires, so you don’t have to work it out yourself.
We can advise on consent requirements and produce windows that tick every planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.
Our timber choices
We use two timber types across the entire window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.
Treated pine represents the most requested option. It is pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and works reliably in Clarkston’s wet conditions.
If you want a natural timber finish, or if you need something more durable, hardwood is the answer, it’s by nature more immune to deterioration and it accepts stains and oils really well.
Property. Exposure. Finish. We help you choose the right timber for each project.
FAQ, timber windows
What types of timber windows do you make?
We manufacture two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Clarkston design, moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to suit any window opening setup.
Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?
Three things: performance, lifespan, looks. Timber wins on all three. Better insulation at the comparable frame thickness. A lot longer lifespan when maintained. Fixable, not fully replaced. And it’s the only material permitted for listed buildings, highly preferred in conservation areas too.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That retains the original frames and look while improving thermal and acoustic results.
