Woodfellas are the timber window team working out of Chapelhall. We build, refurbish, and fit timber windows from our Chapelhall premises, working across both houses and business properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window is custom-built. Sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and upgraded security as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a newer extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever kind of property you’ve got, we build them all in-house and fit ourselves.
Our timber window range
We produce two main types of timber window, one built for older properties, one built for newer ones. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window type for Scottish properties.
Sash windows move up and down within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Chapelhall’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the correct replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, sort, and build custom sash windows that precisely match existing profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance.
A lot of the time, renovating the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible call if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full inspection before recommending full replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows are the hinged type: they swing outward to open, which gives you a bigger opening for fresh air and means you can clean them from inside from inside. They’re common on Chapelhall properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual option for extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Just like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.

Timber windows, why they’re the right choice
Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to homeowners.
Natural insulation
Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. Stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s insulating properties make a tangible impact.
Fix, don’t replace
The great thing about timber windows is that if something deteriorates, you can sort it.
Rot in a sill can be cut out and fresh timber put in its place. A damaged part of frame can be repaired and restored. UPVC offers no such route: when it deteriorates, the whole unit goes to landfill and everything starts again.
Over the lifetime of a property, looking after timber windows rather than replacing them cuts money and reduces material waste. It’s a simple calculation.
Sustainability
Every length of timber we work with is procured from responsibly managed woodland.
Timber is a sustainable resource that sequesters carbon for its entire lifespan and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-based plastic, and aluminium production is highly energy-intensive.
If the environmental footprint of your home matters to you, timber is the clear choice. It’s as simple as that.
Look and value
Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made alternative can copy it.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC never quite manages.
They bring genuine property value too. Especially older properties. Original or sympathetic features matter to buyers.
Double glazing in wooden windows
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.
The sealed unit fits within the timber frame and uses two panes of glass separated by a sealed cavity. The result is lower heat transfer and better sound insulation.
When combined with the natural thermal properties of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window delivers excellent thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement styles.
If your property needs a traditional divided-light appearance, we can add glazing bars, just ask.
The frames are sound, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping what’s worth keeping, lifting thermal performance, no full replacement needed.
This is a common job on Chapelhall’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold air and road noise, and upgrading to double glazing addresses both.
Every unit we install satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance. That’s guaranteed.

Conservation area timber windows
Over 600 conservation areas across Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know what the council requires.
We can help you with consent conditions and make windows that meet every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth if you want to read up.
Timber types
Woodfellas works with two types of timber across its full window range.
Treated pine: most popular option. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds paint well. Holds up reliably in Chapelhall’s rain-heavy climate.
For properties where a natural timber look is preferred, or where added strength is called for, we supply hardwood, which is inherently more immune to wear and takes stains and oils with excellent results.
Property. Exposure level. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each project.
Timber windows FAQ
Which wooden window types do you manufacture?
Sash and case is the traditional Chapelhall window, sliding up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing out, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we build fixed window panels too, for any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?
On results, longevity, and looks: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the comparable frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage happens. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in good condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is improved thermal and acoustic performance while retaining the existing frames and appearance.
