Central has its own timber window makers and we’re called Woodfellas. We build, renovate, and install wooden windows from our premises, serving houses and commercial properties across Central Scotland.
Every window that we make is built to your exact size from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are fitted as standard.
Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full new set: we make in-house and install ourselves.
What timber windows we offer
Two types of timber window. Each built for different properties and specifications. Both available in treated pine or hardwood. Both including double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Traditional sash windows
The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.
Sash windows operate by sliding vertically within a box frame, via a system of weighted cords and pulleys. They are the standard window type on most of Central’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, fix, and build custom sash windows built to match period profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that looks exactly as it should.
If your original frames are sound, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the most sensible call. We do full surveys before recommending replacement, so you know exactly where you are.

Casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and open out to open, creating a bigger opening for fresh air and making access from inside simple. They’re common on Central properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we make custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.
Our timber casement windows section has more information on all listed designs and options.
Wood windows, why they’re the right choice
There’s a reason people have been putting timber windows in properties for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to households.
Natural thermal insulation
Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. The outcome is superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing comes into it.
Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a measurable difference to what you spend, and that difference shows up over the years.
Repair before replace
If a timber window deteriorates, the good news is you can sort it.
Rot in a sill can be excised and new timber put in its stead. A damaged portion of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such alternative: when it fails, the entire unit goes to landfill and the process starts again.
Over the working life of a property, the option to look after timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement means significant savings in both money and material waste.
Timber and sustainability
Every piece of timber we work with is sourced from responsibly managed forest, that’s how we operate.
Holds carbon as long as it ages, then breaks down cleanly. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly energy-intensive. The contrast is clear.
Concerned about your home’s environmental footprint? Timber. Obvious option.
Timber windows, character and value
Timber windows have a heft, physical depth, and natural grain that no man-made material can reproduce.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows belong in a way UPVC never quite manages. Worth noting if the look matter to you.
They bring genuine property value too. Especially period homes. Period features count to potential buyers.
Double-glazed timber windows
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.
The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame and works with two layers of glass separated by a sealed cavity. The result is reduced heat transfer and improved sound insulation.
The timber frame’s natural thermal properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window types. That’s what you get as standard.
We can also fit glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light look.
Where older timber windows are structurally sound but single glazed, we can in many cases switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the original frames and lifting performance without necessitating a full replacement.
Central’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Well-built original sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold and street noise like there’s nothing there.
Every unit we install: satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings
Scotland has over 600 designated conservation areas, and being in one changes what you can do with your windows.
If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council may well require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
Twenty years of producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve been through all of it. We understand what’s required.
We walk you through consent requirements. We produce windows that meet planning condition. Modern performance included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.
Timber types
Two timber types, and that’s what we use across the entire window product range.
Treated pine: most chosen option. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds a painted finish well. Holds up reliably in Central’s damp conditions.
Want a natural timber look or need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood is what you need, by nature more immune to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
Property. Exposure. Finish. We recommend the right timber for each job.
Timber windows FAQ
What timber windows do you make?
We manufacture both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Central design, working by sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.
Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?
Yes, for performance, lifespan, and looks, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes! If your current frames are in solid condition, we can convert to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration, retaining the original frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic results.
