Woodfellas are the timber window team based in Carronshore. We build, renovate, and install wooden windows from our Carronshore premises, working across both homes and business properties across Central Scotland.
Every window we build is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and enhanced security fitted as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a modern extension? A full new set for any property? We build them all ourselves and install ourselves.
Our range of timber windows
Two types. Two sets of requirements. We produce one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window type.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Carronshore’s period tenements were built with sash windows, moving vertically in a box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We refurbish, sort, and make custom sash windows that replicate the original profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results.
Restoration usually includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Best route where existing frames are sound. We survey everything before recommending replacement.

Outward-opening casement windows
Hinged. Open outward to open. Larger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Typical on Carronshore properties dating from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed arrangements, so whatever style you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber windows are the right call
Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the first choice. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to homeowners.
Timber’s insulating qualities
The frame counts, not just the glass. Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame thickness, giving stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
In Scotland, where heating bills are a real concern, the insulating qualities of a timber frame make a tangible effect, and that matters over time.
Repair, don’t replace
Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can repair it.
Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You take it out and splice in fresh timber. Damaged part of frame? Repair. With UPVC, you don’t have that option. When it breaks, the whole thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting again.
Over a property’s lifespan: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts money. Reduces material waste.
Timber sustainability
We procure all our timber from sustainably managed forest, so you can know it’s ethically produced.
Timber is a sustainable resource that sequesters carbon for its entire lifespan and decomposes naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-derived plastic, and aluminium production is highly carbon-heavy.
For homeowners for whom the carbon footprint of their house is a concern, timber is the clear option.
Character and appeal
There’s a heft, a character, and a texture to timber windows that man-made materials simply can’t replicate.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC just can’t.
And they add genuine value to a property too, especially period homes where period features are part of the attraction.
Double glazing in wooden windows
Every single window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always.
Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Sealed cavity between them. Limits heat transfer. Lifts sound insulation.
The timber frame’s inherent insulating properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit achieve excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both window types. That’s what you get as standard.
Traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a real difference.
Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In many cases we can upgrade them to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames and improving thermal performance without replacing everything.
This is a frequent request on Carronshore’s older properties. The existing sash windows are solid, but the single glazing lets in cold and street noise, and converting to double glazing solves both.
Every unit we fit complies with current building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland has more than 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council will likely require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We know what the council requires.
We can walk you through consent requirements and make windows that meet planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.
Timber types
Two timber types. That’s what we use across all window product range.
The most popular option is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and works well in Carronshore’s damp weather.
If a natural timber look is desired, or if extra longevity is needed, hardwood is the option. It’s naturally more resistant to wear and accepts stains and oils very well.
We’ll tell you which timber is right for your project based on the property, the exposure level, and what finish you’re after.
Wooden windows, frequently asked questions
What types of timber windows do you make?
We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Carronshore style, moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing out. We also produce fixed window panels for any opening configuration.
Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?
For performance, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is highly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in good condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. The result is improved thermal and acoustic performance while keeping the existing frames and look.
