Woodfellas built our name in Carluke manufacturing timber windows, and that’s what we’ve always done. We produce, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our Carluke premises, covering residential properties and commercial clients throughout Central Scotland.
Not a single window leaves our workshop without being made to measure. Sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and enhanced security, all standard.
Tenements need sash and case, contemporary extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete new set. Whatever the property type, we build ourselves and put them in ourselves. No middlemen.
Our timber window options
We make two primary types of timber window, one suited to older properties, one right for newer ones. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash window types
The traditional window style for Scottish properties.
Sash windows move up and down within a box frame, with a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the historic window type on most of Carluke’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
Whether your sash windows need restoring, repairing, or replacing altogether, we make custom ones that replicate the existing profiles and proportions, while still giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance.
A lot of the time, renovating the original frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible option if the frames themselves are still in good shape. We always do a full inspection before suggesting a replacement.

Hinged windows
Hinged. Open out to open. Bigger opening, easier cleaning from inside. Standard on Carluke properties dating from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we make custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is built to order and double glazed as standard.
Our timber casement windows section has more detail on all listed designs and choices.
Why choose timber for your windows
Timber windows have been around for centuries, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to property owners.
How timber insulates naturally
Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. This gives you stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.
Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s insulating properties make a measurable effect.
Repair not replace
Where deterioration occurs in a timber window, restoration remains a practical option.
Got rot in a sill? You take it out and splice in new timber. Damaged section of frame? Replace in section. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it fails, the entire thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting again.
Over the life of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them saves real cost and cuts down on waste.
Sustainability
All our timber is procured from responsibly managed forests.
Timber is a sustainable material, it locks in carbon as it works and decomposes cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production takes a huge amount of energy.
If the carbon impact of your property is important to you, timber is clearly the right option. It’s not complicated.
Character and property value
Pick up a timber window sash and you notice it, weight, depth, grain. No synthetic material can replicate that.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows belong in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth noting if the look matter to you.
They add real property value too. Especially period properties. Original or sympathetic features count to buyers.
Double glazed timber windows
Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that leaves our workshop includes double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always has.
The sealed unit fits within the timber frame, using two layers of glass separated by a cavity to limit heat transfer and improve sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they deliver excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both styles, sash or casement, same result.
Traditional divided-light appearance? We can fit glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real visual difference.
Still sound but single glazed? We can in many cases switch to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames, improving performance, and skipping a full replacement.
It’s a very common request on Carluke’s older properties, well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold and road noise. Easily fixed.
Every unit we fit is compliant with current building regulations for thermal standards. Always.

Timber windows in conservation areas
Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not permitted. Council may require replacements replicating the original. Material, design, profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know what the council requires.
We can advise on consent conditions and make windows that tick every planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.
Timber types
Two timber types. That’s it. We work with both for all window range.
Treated pine is the most requested option. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and holds up reliably in Carluke’s damp weather.
For properties where a natural timber finish is desired, or where extra durability is needed, we supply hardwood, which is naturally more immune to deterioration and accepts stains and oils beautifully.
We help you choose the best timber for each job, taking into consideration the property style, its exposure, and the wanted finish.
Common questions about timber windows
What styles of timber windows do you make?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Carluke style, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows hinge and swing out. We also make fixed window panels for any window opening setup.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
On all three fronts, thermal performance, lifespan, and looks, yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at equivalent frame thicknesses, lasts considerably longer when regularly maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In a significant number of cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in good condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This retains the existing frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic standards.
