Woodfellas are Carfin’s leading timber window specialists, manufacturing, restoring, and fitting timber windows from a Carfin base that covers houses and business properties right across Central Scotland.
Not a single window we make without being built to order. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and upgraded security, all standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a newer extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we make them all ourselves and fit ourselves.
What wooden windows we make
Two types of timber window. Each suited to different properties and specifications. Both available in treated pine or hardwood. Both with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash and case windows
The traditional window type for Scottish properties.
Sash windows move vertically within a box frame, with a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Carfin’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the correct replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, sort, and make custom sash windows that replicate original profiles and proportions while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance.
A lot of the time, refurbishing the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better option if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full assessment before suggesting full replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows swing out on hinges, wider opening for ventilation, easy access from inside. You’ll spot them all over Carfin properties dating from the 1920s onwards, and on extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.
For more on designs and configurations, our timber casement windows page has everything you need.
Why timber is the right choice for windows
Timber has been the standard window material for hundreds of years, and it’s worth understanding why. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to property owners, and that’s not just tradition.
Timber’s insulating qualities
The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame width, giving stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.
In a place like Scotland, where energy bills are a real challenge for homeowners, the thermal characteristics of a timber frame make a tangible impact.
Fix it, don’t replace it
Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can sort it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail, new timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets rebuilt. The story with UPVC is different: it can’t be repaired, so when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Think about it: over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them saves serious money and cuts a lot of waste.
Timber sustainability
We get all our timber from sustainably managed forests, so you can know it’s responsibly produced.
Timber is a renewable resource, it locks in carbon as it ages and breaks down cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a huge amount of power.
Care about your home’s carbon footprint? Timber. Clear option.
The appeal and value of timber windows
Timber windows have a substance, depth, and texture that no artificial alternative can reproduce.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Light stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly wrong, it never quite manages that same rightness.
Timber windows also bring tangible value to a property, particularly period properties where period features are part of the appeal.
Double glazing timber windows
All windows manufactured by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units installed as standard.
Two layers of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and handles the rest, limiting heat transfer, improving sound insulation.
The timber frame’s inherent thermal properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit achieve excellent thermal and acoustic results across both window styles. That’s what you get as standard.
We can also install glazing bars if your property needs a traditional divided-light appearance.
Still solid but single glazed? We can in many cases convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping the existing frames, boosting performance, and skipping a full replacement.
This represents a frequent job on Carfin’s older properties, where solidly built existing sash windows perform structurally well but single glazing lets in cold air and street noise.
Every sealed unit we put in meets current building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Scotland has over 600 recognised conservation areas.
Where a property is located in one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and the local council authority will often require replacements to mirror the existing window in material, design, and profile.
Having produced timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a solid understanding of what the council expects.
We can walk you through consent requirements and build windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in full detail.
Our timber types
Two timber types, and that’s what we stock across the entire window product range.
Treated pine is the most frequently chosen choice. It is pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish readily, and works well in Carfin’s rain-heavy conditions.
A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood answers both. Naturally more wear-resistant, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
We advise on the right timber for each job, based on the property, its exposure level, and the finish you want. Just let us know and we’ll steer you right.
Timber windows FAQ
What types of timber windows do you make?
We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Carfin design, working by sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?
On all three counts, thermal performance, lifespan, and looks, yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at equivalent frame thicknesses, lasts a lot longer when properly maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage happens. Timber is also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is highly favoured in conservation areas.
Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in solid condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The outcome is improved thermal and acoustic results while preserving the existing frames and appearance.
