Timber Windows Calton

Woodfellas are the timber window team working out of Calton. We manufacture, refurbish, and put in timber windows from our Calton base, serving both houses and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window that we produce is built to your exact size from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and improved security are fitted as standard.

Tenements need sash and case, newer extensions want casement, and some properties need a full replacement set. Whatever the property type, we produce ourselves and fit ourselves. No middlemen.

Wooden windows we make

Two types of timber window. Each suited to different properties and requirements. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Both featuring double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Classic sash windows

The traditional Scottish window style.

Slide up and down. Timber box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Calton’s period tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

Whether your sash windows need renovating, repairing, or replacing altogether, we make custom ones that replicate the period profiles and proportions, while still delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest call where existing frames are solid. We survey everything before recommending replacement.

Casement window types

Hinged. Open out to open. Wider opening, easier cleaning from inside. Common on Calton properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all listed options and choices in complete detail.

Why choose timber for your windows

Timber’s long-standing position as the go-to window material is not just a matter of tradition. It genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that matter most to homeowners.

Timber’s natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. Stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a real difference.

Timber windows, fix before replace

Where wear appears in a timber window, restoration remains a realistic choice.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail, new timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets rebuilt. The story with UPVC is not the same: no repair option, so when it fails, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Over the life of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than replacing them saves real money and cuts down on waste.

Sustainability

The timber we work with is procured from responsibly managed woodland, every length of it.

Timber is a natural material, it locks in carbon as it stands and decomposes cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a enormous amount of energy.

If the environmental side matters to you the carbon footprint of your home, timber is the obvious option.

The character and value of timber windows

The weight, character, and grain of timber windows is something no man-made alternative can match.

On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows fit right in a way UPVC just can’t. Worth considering if the look count to you.

Timber windows also contribute genuine value to a property, particularly period properties where period-appropriate features are part of the overall appeal.

Double glazed wooden windows

All windows made by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, come with double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

The sealed unit fits within the timber frame and uses two sheets of glass separated by a cavity. The result is less heat transfer and improved sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural thermal characteristics with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.

If your property calls for a traditional divided-light look, we can add glazing bars, just let us know.

Still sound but single glazed? We can often convert to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames, lifting performance, and skipping a full replacement.

This is a frequent project on Calton’s older properties. The original sash windows are well-built, but the single glazing admits cold and ambient noise, and upgrading to double glazing solves both.

And every unit we fit satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards, so you’re covered.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland contains in excess of 600 designated conservation areas.

In a conservation area? UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council will likely require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we understand what the council requires.

We can advise on consent conditions and build windows that meet planning condition while delivering modern performance. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.

Wood types we work with

Across all our window products, we stock two types of timber.

Treated pine: most requested choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds paint well. Works reliably in Calton’s wet conditions.

For properties where a natural timber finish is preferred, or where extra durability is needed, we stock hardwood, which is by nature more immune to deterioration and accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Property, exposure level, finish, three things we look at before helping you choose the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

Sash and case is the traditional Calton style, moving up and down in a timber box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we build fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

Three things: performance, longevity, appearance. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the comparable frame width. A lot longer lifespan when looked after. Can be repaired, not fully replaced. And it’s the sole material permitted for listed buildings, highly preferred in conservation areas too.

Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?

Most cases, yes. The existing frames are good, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, appearance stays, and the thermal and acoustic results improves, without a full replacement.
