Woodfellas are the timber window experts operating from Callander. We make, restore, and install wooden windows from our Callander premises, working across both residential properties and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window we build is custom-built from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and enhanced security installed as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a modern extension? A full replacement set for any property? We build them all ourselves and put them in ourselves.
Our wooden window range
We manufacture two main types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Classic sash windows
The classic Scottish window, and still the best.
Move vertically. Timber box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Callander’s period tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
The best sash windows should look exactly like the original. We restore, sort, and manufacture custom ones replicating original profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance where it matters.
A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the more sensible route if the frames themselves are still solid. We do a full survey before recommending full replacement.

Casement windows
Hinged. Swing outward to open. Bigger opening, easier access from inside. Common on Callander properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we build is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber windows are the right call
There’s a reason people have been putting timber windows in houses for hundreds of years, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to property owners.
Natural thermal performance
The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame thickness, giving superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a tangible impact to what you pay.
Repair before replace
If a timber window deteriorates, the good news is you can sort it.
Rot in a sill? Take it out, splice in new timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it breaks, it ends up in landfill, you start again.
Over the lifespan of a property, maintaining and repairing timber windows rather than going for full replacement saves cost and cuts waste. It’s a straightforward calculation.
The sustainable choice
All our timber comes from responsibly managed forests.
Timber: sustainable. Holds carbon. Breaks down cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium manufacturing: highly energy-intensive.
Care about your property’s environmental footprint? Timber. Obvious option.
Appeal and property value
Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, substance, character, texture. No synthetic material can match that.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they fit. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly off, it never quite manages that same fit.
And they contribute real value to a property, especially period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.
Double glazing in timber windows
Every window we produce, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons needed.
The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame: it’s two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which reduces heat transfer and improves sound insulation.
Combine the timber frame’s inherent insulating qualities with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window types.
Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We install glazing bars.
If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can often switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This retains the original frames and boosts thermal performance without a full replacement.
This is a common project on Callander’s older properties. The existing sash windows are solid, but the single glazing allows in cold air and ambient noise, and converting to double glazing fixes both.
Every unit we fit: complies with the latest building regulations for thermal performance.

Timber windows in conservation areas
Scotland has over 600 designated conservation areas, and if you’re in one changes what you are permitted to do with your windows.
If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council might well require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know exactly what the council requires.
We help with consent requirements. We produce windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern performance included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Our timber choices
Two timber types. That’s what we stock across the entire window product range.
Treated pine: most chosen choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds paint well. Holds up well in Callander’s damp weather.
Want a natural timber look or need extra strength? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more immune to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
Property, exposure, finish, three things we consider before advising on the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.
Wooden windows, frequently asked questions
What types of timber windows can you make?
We make two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Callander design, moving up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
On results, longevity, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates better at the same frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.
Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?
In many cases, yes! If your current frames are in good condition, we can convert to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic results.
