Woodfellas are the timber window experts operating from Bridge of Weir. We build, refurbish, and put in wooden windows from our Bridge of Weir workshop, working across both houses and business properties across Central Scotland.
Every window that we make is built to your exact size from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a newer extension, or a complete set of new windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we make them all in-house and fit ourselves.
Our range of timber windows
We produce two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and needs. Whichever you go for, both are available in treated pine or hardwood and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional Scottish window design.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Bridge of Weir’s period tenements were built with sash windows, sliding vertically in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
The finest sash windows look exactly like the original. We renovate, repair, and build custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic performance where it matters.
A lot of the time, refurbishing the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the smarter call if the frames themselves are still in good shape. We do a full survey before recommending full replacement.

Standard casement windows
The hinged window. Swings out, lets in a wider flow of air, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became standard on Bridge of Weir properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever configuration you need, we can make it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows
Timber’s historic position as the first-choice window material is not simply a matter of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that count to households.
Natural insulation
Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. The result is better thermal performance from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing factors in.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames retain warmth better makes a real difference to what you spend.
Repair, don’t replace
Timber window damaged? You can repair it.
Rot in a sill? Cut it out, put in fresh timber. Damaged frame part? Rebuild it. UPVC can’t be repaired: it breaks, it goes to landfill, you start again.
Over a property’s lifetime: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts money. Cuts waste.
Sustainability
We get all our timber from ethically managed woodland, so you can rest easy it’s ethically produced.
Locks in carbon as long as it ages, then breaks down naturally. No landfill, no toxic process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly carbon-heavy. The difference doesn’t need explaining.
If you care about the carbon impact of your home, timber is the clear option.
Aesthetics and worth
Timber windows possess a heft, character, and texture that no man-made material can reproduce.
Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also contribute tangible value to a property, particularly period properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.
Double glazing timber windows
Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we produce has double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always has.
The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, limiting heat transfer and improving sound insulation.
When combined with the inherent insulating qualities of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement styles.
If your property calls for a traditional divided-light appearance, we can add glazing bars, just ask.
Still sound but single glazed? We can in many cases switch to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the original frames, boosting performance, and skipping a full replacement.
This is a regular job on Bridge of Weir’s older properties, where well-constructed existing sash windows are well-built but single glazing admits cold and ambient noise.
And every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so no worries there.

Conservation area timber windows
Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.
If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC isn’t an permitted window material, and your local council might well require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have a thorough understanding of what the council expects.
Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern standards, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.
Timber types
Across all our window ranges, we work with two types of timber.
The most common choice is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and holds up reliably in Bridge of Weir’s wet climate.
Want a natural timber look or need extra strength? Hardwood is the answer, by nature more immune to deterioration, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.
Not sure which timber to pick? We help you choose the right timber for each project based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you have in mind.
Common questions about timber windows
What types of timber windows do you make?
We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Bridge of Weir design, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
On results, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the same frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage happens. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. Sound current frames? We convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames stay, thermal and acoustic results gets better.
