Timber Windows Bridge of Allan

If you need timber windows done right in Bridge of Allan, Woodfellas are who you want. We make, refurbish, and install wooden windows out of our Bridge of Allan workshop, working across houses and commercial clients right across Central Scotland.

Each window is built to order using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security are fitted as standard on every unit.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a contemporary extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any type of property, we build them in-house and install ourselves.

What wooden windows we make

We produce two main types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Whichever you choose, both are available in treated pine or hardwood and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

Scotland’s original window type.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Bridge of Allan’s period tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding vertically in a box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, repair, and make custom sash windows designed to match existing profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic performance in a window that fits right in.

Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest call where existing frames are sound. We inspect everything before recommending any replacement.

Hinged casement windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a bigger opening for fresh air and means you can clean them from inside from inside. They’re all over Bridge of Allan properties built from the 1920s on, and they’re the standard choice for rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

There’s a good reason people have been putting timber windows in homes for hundreds of years, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to households.

Natural insulation

Here’s something that catches out people: timber actually carries heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the same frame width. That means the frame itself is already doing better thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

Scotland. Cold. Costly to heat. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a tangible effect.

Timber windows, fix before replace

The key thing about timber windows is that if something gets damaged, you can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Remove it and put in new timber. Damaged section of frame? Replace in section. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re starting from scratch.

Over a property’s lifespan: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts cost. Reduces material waste.

Environmental performance

All our timber comes from responsibly managed forest.

Timber holds carbon and decomposes cleanly, it’s a sustainable resource. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly carbon-heavy.

For people for whom the environmental footprint of their house is a concern, timber is the obvious choice.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Timber windows have a heft, a feel, and a natural grain that no artificial material can come close to.

Sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC never quite manages.

Value, too. On period homes, where period features are part of what makes them special, timber windows bring tangible worth that UPVC can’t match.

Double glazing in wooden windows

All windows produced by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, include double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two sheets of glass. Sealed cavity between them. Limits heat transfer. Boosts sound insulation.

Put that double glazing together with the natural insulating characteristics of the timber frame, and you’ve got strong thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We fit glazing bars.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still in good shape? We can often upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay. Performance improves. No full replacement.

It comes up a lot on Bridge of Allan’s older properties, existing sash windows that are well-constructed, but the single glazing admits cold and road noise like it’s not even there.

And every unit we put in satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards, so you’re covered.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland: over 600 officially recognised conservation areas.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council may require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.

We’ve been making timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We understand what the council expects, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

We can advise on consent conditions and produce windows meeting every planning condition while achieving modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the applicable regulations in more detail.

Our timber choices

Two timber types. That’s what we stock across the entire window product range.

Treated pine: most chosen option. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Takes a painted finish well. Works reliably in Bridge of Allan’s wet weather.

A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood is the answer for both. Inherently more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Property, exposure, finish, three things we look at before helping you choose the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Bridge of Allan style, sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

Three things: results, longevity, looks. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the comparable frame width. Considerably longer lifespan when maintained. Can be repaired, not fully replaced. And it’s the only material accepted for listed buildings, strongly favoured in conservation areas too.

Can existing timber windows be upgraded to double glazing?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. This retains the original frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic standards.
