If you need timber windows done well in Bothwell, Woodfellas are the right choice. We produce, restore, and put in timber windows out of our Bothwell workshop, serving houses and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window that we make is custom-built from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and improved security are fitted as standard.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a modern extension, or a full replacement set for any type of property, we make them ourselves and put them in ourselves.
Our timber window lineup
Two primary types of timber window, each right for different properties and needs. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s traditional window type.
Before UPVC, before aluminium, Bothwell’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were built with sash windows, moving up and down in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, repair, and manufacture custom ones matching original profiles and proportions, while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results where it counts.
The original frames are in good shape, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible route. We complete full inspections first, before we ever recommend replacement.

Standard casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and open out to open, giving a larger opening for airflow and making access from inside straightforward. They’re standard on Bothwell properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Why timber is the right call
Timber’s centuries-long position as the go-to window material is not simply a question of tradition. It genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to households.
Natural insulating qualities
Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame widths. Better thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
Scotland runs on heating bills. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a measurable difference to what you spend, and that saving adds up over time.
Timber windows, fix before replace
Timber window gets damaged? Good news: you can fix it.
Rot in a sill, new timber goes in. Damaged frame part, it gets rebuilt. The story with UPVC is not the same: it can’t be repaired, so when it fails, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Over the lifetime of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them cuts real cost and cuts down on waste.
The sustainable choice
Every bit of timber we work with is sourced from responsibly managed forest.
Timber is a sustainable resource that holds carbon across its lifespan and decomposes naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-derived plastic, and aluminium production is highly carbon-heavy.
Concerned about your property’s carbon footprint? Timber. Clear choice.
The appeal and value of timber windows
Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made material can replicate it.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way UPVC simply can’t match.
And they contribute real value to a property, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are what buyers look for.
Double glazing in wooden windows
All windows made by Woodfellas, whether sash or casement, feature double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard.
Sealed unit in the frame. Two sheets of glass. Cavity between them. Reduces heat transfer. Lifts sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you strong thermal and acoustic performance across both styles, sash or casement, same result.
We can also fit glazing bars if your property requires a traditional divided-light appearance.
If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration. This keeps the existing frames and lifts performance without a full replacement.
This represents a common project on Bothwell’s older properties, where solidly built existing sash windows are well-built but single glazing lets in cold and ambient noise.
Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we put in satisfies them. No exceptions.

Timber windows for conservation areas
More than 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.
If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC isn’t an permitted window material, and your local council may well insist on replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.
We’ve been making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we understand what the council expects, no surprises.
We can guide you through consent conditions and make windows meeting every planning condition while achieving modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the relevant regulations in greater detail.
Types of timber we work with
Two timber types. That’s what we work with across the entire window range.
The most requested choice is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and performs well in Bothwell’s damp climate.
A natural timber finish, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood is the answer for both. Inherently more resistant to wear, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.
We’ll recommend which timber is best for your project based on the property, the exposure level, and what look you’re after.
Timber windows FAQ
What types of timber windows do you make?
We manufacture two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Bothwell style, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing out. We also build fixed window panels to suit any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For performance, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the same frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be fixed not replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In many cases, yes! If your existing frames are in sound condition, we can switch to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme, preserving the existing frames and look while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
