Timber Windows Bo ness

Woodfellas. Bo ness-based timber window specialists. We manufacture, refurbish, and install timber windows from our Bo ness workshop, serving homes and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window that leaves our workshop is made to measure from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a contemporary extension, or a full new set for any type of property, we produce them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our wooden window options

We build two main types of timber window, one built for older properties, one suited to newer ones. Both are made in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

The traditional Scottish window type.

Sash windows slide up and down within a timber box frame, via a system of weighted cords and pulleys. They are the original window type on most of Bo ness’s period tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, repair, and make custom sash windows that nail the existing profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic results.

Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the most sensible route where the original frames are in good condition. We do full inspections before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows

The hinged window. Opens outward, lets in more air, easy to clean from inside without leaning out. Casement windows became the norm on Bo ness properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is built to order and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page has more information on all available options and choices.

Why timber is the right call

Timber has been the leading window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to households.

Natural insulation

The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber transfers heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width, giving superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal characteristics make a tangible effect to what you spend, and that saving shows up over time.

Repair before replace

Where wear occurs in a timber window, repair remains a realistic choice.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and new timber spliced in. A damaged section of frame can be repaired. UPVC isn’t repairable in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you start over.

Over the lifespan of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than having to replace them saves real money and reduces waste.

Timber and sustainability

The timber we select is procured from responsibly managed forest, every piece of it.

Timber: natural. Stores carbon. Decomposes cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly carbon-heavy.

If the environmental impact of your house is important to you, timber is clearly the right option. It’s straightforward.

The character and value of timber windows

The heft, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is what no artificial material can replicate.

On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way that UPVC never quite manages.

Value, too. On older properties, where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them special, timber windows bring tangible value that UPVC never quite does.

Double-glazed timber windows

Every window we build, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units as standard. No extras required.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, cutting heat transfer and improving sound insulation.

The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they deliver excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both styles, sash or casement, same standard.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can fit those as well.

Older frames. Single glazed. Still in good shape? We can often convert to double glazing as part of a restoration. Existing frames are preserved. Performance gets better. No full replacement.

This is a common project on Bo ness’s older properties. The existing sash windows are solid, but the single glazing allows in cold air and ambient noise, and upgrading to double glazing addresses both.

And every unit we put in satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards, so no worries there.

Listed buildings timber windows

More than 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

Conservation area, and your windows need replacing? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council will often require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years. We understand what the council expects, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

We help with consent requirements. We make windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern standards guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Timber types we work with

Two timber types. That’s it. We work with both across all window range.

The most requested choice is treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a painted finish well, and holds up reliably in Bo ness’s wet weather.

Want a natural timber look? Need extra durability? Hardwood. Inherently more resistant to deterioration. Takes stains and oils really well.

We advise on the best timber for each job, taking into consideration the property type, its exposure, and the wanted finish.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

Sash and case is the traditional Bo ness style, sliding up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open out, that’s the other. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood. And we make fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

For results, lifespan, and looks? Yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the same frame width, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Can I replace single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are sound, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames remain, character is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
