Timber Windows Bloomfield

If you need timber windows done well in Bloomfield, Woodfellas are who you want. We build, renovate, and put in wooden windows out of our Bloomfield workshop, covering residential properties and commercial clients throughout Central Scotland.

Each window is made to measure using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and improved security are included as standard on every window.

Tenements need sash and case, modern extensions want casement, and some properties need a full replacement set. Whatever the job, we build in-house and put them in ourselves. No middlemen.

Our timber window range

We produce two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

Scotland’s traditional window design.

Sash windows work on a simple but clever system: they slide vertically in a timber box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. You’ll see them on most of Bloomfield’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and if you’ve got a listed property or conservation area property, they’re the required replacement where sash and case was the existing design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We refurbish, fix, and manufacture custom ones replicating period profiles and proportions, while giving you modern thermal and acoustic performance where it matters.

If your existing frames are in good condition, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible route. We do full surveys before recommending replacement, so you always know where you stand.

Traditional casement windows

Hinged. Swing out to open. Wider opening, easier cleaning from inside. Standard on Bloomfield properties built from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We produce custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Double glazed as standard.

Why choose timber for your windows

Centuries of timber windows, and they’re not still around out of habit. Timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to households. The record speak for themselves.

Timber’s natural insulation

Did you know timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width? That means better thermal performance from the frame itself, before you even factor in the double glazing.

Scotland runs on central heating. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a real effect to what you spend, and that saving shows up over the years.

Repair before replace

Damage happens. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Cut it out, fit new timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it goes, it goes to landfill, you start again.

Over a property’s lifespan: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves money. Reduces material waste.

Timber and the environment

All our timber is procured from sustainably managed forest.

Holds carbon as long as it ages, then biodegrades cleanly. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly carbon-heavy. The contrast doesn’t need explaining.

If the carbon impact of your home is important to you, timber is obviously the right option. It’s straightforward.

Aesthetics and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made material can replicate it.

On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an visual fit that UPVC never quite manages.

They bring genuine property value too. Especially period properties. Original or sympathetic features matter to potential buyers.

Timber windows with double glazing

Every window we produce, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons needed.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame: it’s two layers of glass with a cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and improves sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can install those too.

If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can often convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This retains the original frames and lifts performance without a full replacement.

This is a regular project on Bloomfield’s older properties. The original sash windows are well-built, but the single glazing allows in cold and street noise, and converting to double glazing solves both.

And every unit we fit complies with the latest building regulations for thermal standards, so no worries there.

Timber windows and conservation areas

There are more than 600 conservation areas across Scotland, a significant number.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and your local council may well insist on replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a strong understanding of what the council expects.

Consent requirements, planning conditions, modern performance, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.

Wood types we work with

Two timber types. That’s it. We work with both for the entire window range.

Treated pine is what most people choose, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and holds up in Bloomfield’s rain-heavy conditions without a problem.

If you prefer a natural timber finish, or if you need something extra durable, hardwood is the answer, it’s inherently more immune to wear and it accepts stains and oils really well.

We advise on the right timber for each project, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you want. Just let us know and we’ll steer you right.

Timber windows FAQ

What types of timber windows can you make?

We manufacture sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Bloomfield style, sliding up and down in a timber box frame. Casements: hinged, open out. Fixed panels made too, for any window opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

Yes, for results, longevity, and looks, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame thickness, lasts significantly longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Can existing timber windows be converted to double glazing?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The outcome is improved thermal and acoustic performance while keeping the existing frames and character.
