Timber Windows Blackwood

Blackwood has its own timber window experts and we’re called Woodfellas. We make, renovate, and fit timber windows from our workshop, serving residential properties and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window is built to order. Sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood. Double glazing and improved security as standard.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a Victorian tenement, casement windows for a modern extension, or a complete set of new windows for any sort of property, we produce them ourselves and fit ourselves.

What wooden windows we offer

We make two main types of timber window, each suited to different properties and specifications. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

Scotland’s traditional window design.

Move up and down. Box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Blackwood’s period tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, fix, and make custom sash windows designed to match existing profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic results in a window that looks exactly as it should.

Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest call where the original frames are in good condition. We do full surveys before recommending replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a bigger opening for airflow and means you can reach them easily from inside. They’re common on Blackwood properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the standard option for extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We make custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one built to order. Fitted with double glazing as standard.

All the designs, all the configurations, it’s on our timber casement windows page.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

There’s a reason people have been installing timber windows in houses for centuries, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to property owners.

Timber’s natural insulation

Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. This gives you better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even factored in.

In Scotland, heating bills are a real issue. The thermal characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable effect to those costs, and it’s worth knowing.

Repair, not replace

Timber window deteriorates? Good news: you can fix it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be excised and new timber spliced in its stead. A damaged part of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC offers no such route: when it deteriorates, the whole unit goes to landfill and everything starts again.

Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts money. Reduces waste.

Sustainability

All our timber is procured from responsibly managed forests.

Timber holds carbon and decomposes cleanly, it’s a renewable material. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive.

For people for whom the environmental footprint of their house is a concern, timber represents the obvious choice.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Pick up a timber window sash and you notice it, substance, thickness, texture. No man-made material can replicate that.

Sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they belong. Put UPVC in and something’s slightly wrong, it just can’t that same fit.

Timber windows also contribute tangible value to a property, particularly period properties where original or sympathetic features are what attracts buyers.

Double glazed timber windows

Every window we build, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons needed.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame and uses two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity. The effect is lower heat transfer and improved sound insulation.

Combined with the inherent thermal characteristics of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window gives you excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement styles.

Traditional divided-light appearance? We can add glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a real visual difference.

Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the original frames and improving thermal performance without a full replacement.

It’s a particularly regular request on Blackwood’s older properties, solid existing sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and road noise. Readily fixed.

Every unit we install: meets current building regulations for thermal standards.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The odds are yours is one of them.

If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an acceptable window material. Your local council may require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we know exactly what the council expects, nothing new to us.

We advise on consent conditions. We build windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern performance guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Our timber types

We work with two timber types across the entire window range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine: most popular choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Holds a painted finish well. Performs well in Blackwood’s rain-heavy weather.

Want a natural timber look or need extra strength? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more resistant to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Not sure which timber to choose? We advise on the right timber for each job based on the property, the exposure, and the finish you want.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Blackwood design, moving vertically in a timber box frame. Casements: hinged, swing outward. Fixed panels made too, for any window opening configuration.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

On performance, lifespan, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the comparable frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage happens. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in sound condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That retains the existing frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
