Timber Windows Bishopbriggs

Woodfellas built our name in Bishopbriggs manufacturing timber windows, and that’s what we’re still doing. We make, restore, and fit timber windows from our Bishopbriggs base, covering residential properties and commercial clients throughout Central Scotland.

Every window we make is made to measure from ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security fitted as standard.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a modern extension, or a full set of new windows for whatever sort of property you’ve got, we make them all ourselves and install ourselves.

Our timber window range

We make two primary types of timber window, each designed for different properties and requirements. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Classic sash windows

Scotland’s original window design.

Sash windows slide up and down within a box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the historic window type on most of Bishopbriggs’s period tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

The best sash windows should look exactly like the original. We restore, fix, and make custom ones mirroring existing profiles and proportions, while giving you modern thermal and acoustic results where it counts.

Restoration typically includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest call where the existing frames are in good condition. We complete full inspections before recommending any replacement.

Casement window types

Casement windows are the hinged type: they open outward to open, which gives you a bigger opening for fresh air and means you can clean them easily from inside. They’re common on Bishopbriggs properties dating from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual option for extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Timber has been the go-to window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to homeowners.

Natural heat insulation

Here’s something that catches out people: timber actually carries heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame thickness. That means the frame itself is already doing better thermal work before you even factor in the double glazing.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames retain warmth better makes a real impact to what you pay.

Repair, don’t replace

The best thing about timber windows is that if something gets damaged, you can repair it.

Rot in a sill? Cut it out, splice in fresh timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC can’t be repaired: it breaks, it ends up in landfill, you start again.

Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts money. Cuts waste.

Sustainability

The timber we work with is procured from sustainably managed forest, every piece of it.

Timber: sustainable. Stores carbon. Breaks down naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium manufacturing: extremely carbon-heavy.

Concerned about your home’s environmental footprint? Timber. Obvious option.

Timber windows, character and value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No man-made material can replicate it.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows look right. UPVC never quite manages.

And they add tangible value to a property too, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of what makes them the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Sash or casement, it doesn’t matter. Every window that we produce has double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always has.

The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame: it’s two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and improves sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural thermal characteristics with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

For properties that call for a traditional divided-light appearance, we can add glazing bars as an addition.

If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This retains the existing frames and boosts thermal performance without a full replacement.

It’s a particularly frequent request on Bishopbriggs’s older properties, well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and ambient noise. Readily fixed.

And every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so no worries there.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

Conservation area, and your windows need replacing? UPVC is not an acceptable material, your local council may require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.

Twenty years of producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve seen them all. We understand what’s expected.

We can guide you through consent conditions and produce windows that satisfy every planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the applicable regulations in more detail.

Types of timber we work with

Two timber types. That’s what we stock across all window product range.

Treated pine is what most customers go for, pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and handles Bishopbriggs’s rain-heavy weather without a problem.

Want a natural timber look? Need extra strength? Hardwood. Naturally more resistant to wear. Takes stains and oils really well.

We’ll tell you which timber is best for your job based on the property, the exposure level, and what look you’re after.

Common questions about timber windows

What kinds of timber windows do you offer?

Sash and case is the traditional Bishopbriggs style, moving up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open out, that’s the other. Both come in treated pine or hardwood. And we build fixed window panels too, for any window opening setup.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

On performance, longevity, and appearance: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the same frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

Many cases, yes. The current frames are sound, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Original frames stay, character is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic results improves, without a full replacement.
