Woodfellas are the timber window experts working out of Beith. We build, refurbish, and install timber windows from our Beith workshop, covering both residential properties and commercial properties across Central Scotland.
Each window is made to measure using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard on every window.
Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a newer extension, or a complete set of new windows for whatever type of property you’ve got, we build them all ourselves and put them in ourselves.
Our timber windows
Two types. Two sets of requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window type.
Slide vertically. Timber box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Beith’s period tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.
We renovate, repair, and manufacture custom sash windows that match original profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic standards.
Restoration often covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Most sensible route where original frames are in good condition. We survey fully before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows swing outward on hinges, creating a wider opening for ventilation and making window cleaning easier from inside. They’re the standard choice on Beith properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Like our sash windows, every casement is built to order and double glazed as standard.
All the options, all the choices, it’s on our timber casement windows section.
Why timber windows are the right choice
Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a good reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that make a difference to households.
Timber’s insulating properties
Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. The result is superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, and that’s before the double glazing gets involved.
Scotland depends on heating bills. A timber frame’s thermal properties make a measurable effect to what you pay, and that saving shows up over the years.
Repair, don’t replace
Timber window gets damaged? You can sort it.
Got rot in a sill? You take it out and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Rebuild. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it fails, the entire thing goes to landfill and you’re starting again.
Think about it: over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than going for full replacement saves serious money and cuts a lot of material waste.
The sustainable choice
The timber we use is sourced from ethically managed woodland, every length of it.
Timber locks in carbon and biodegrades naturally, it’s a renewable resource. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is highly carbon-heavy.
For homeowners for whom the environmental footprint of their home is a consideration, timber represents the clear option.
Character and value
There’s a substance, a character, and a grain to timber windows that synthetic materials simply can’t match.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also add measurable value to a property, especially period properties where original or sympathetic features constitute part of the property’s appeal.
Timber windows with double glazing
Every single window we make, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units included as standard. Always.
Two panes of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and manages the rest, limiting heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.
Combined with the natural thermal characteristics of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window achieves solid thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement types.
Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a big visual difference.
Still sound but single glazed? We can often convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining the existing frames, boosting thermal performance, and skipping a full replacement.
It happens a lot on Beith’s older properties, original sash windows that are solid, but the single glazing allows in cold and ambient noise like it’s not even there.
Every unit we put in satisfies current building regulations governing thermal performance.

Timber windows for conservation areas
More than 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.
Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will often require replacements matching the original. Material, design, profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland, we understand what the council expects.
We can walk you through consent conditions and produce windows that satisfy planning condition while delivering modern standards. If you want more on the regulations, our sash and case windows page covers them in detail.
Timber options
We work with two timber types across the entire window range, here’s what you need to know about each.
Treated pine represents the most frequently chosen option. It is pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, accepts a painted finish well, and works well in Beith’s wet weather.
A natural timber look, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood answers both. By nature more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.
We recommend the most appropriate timber for each project, taking into consideration the property style, its exposure, and the required finish.
Timber windows FAQ
What types of timber windows do you make?
We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case: the traditional Beith design, sliding up and down in a timber box frame. Casements: hinged, open out. Fixed panels available too, for any window opening setup.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For results, longevity, and looks? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts significantly longer when maintained, and can be repaired not replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. The outcome is better thermal and acoustic results while keeping the existing frames and look.
