Woodfellas. Bearsden-based timber window experts. We manufacture, refurbish, and fit wooden windows from our Bearsden premises, covering houses and business properties throughout Central Scotland.
Built to order, responsibly sourced timber, double glazing, upgraded security. Every window we make is built the same way. No shortcuts.
Tenements need sash and case, newer extensions want casement, and some properties need a complete replacement set. Whatever the job, we make ourselves and fit ourselves. No middlemen.
Our timber window range
Two primary types of timber window, each perfectly suited to different properties and specifications. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional Scottish window type.
You know what makes sash windows clever? They move vertically in a box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. They’re the original window on most of Bearsden’s period tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We refurbish, fix, and make custom sash windows designed to match period profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic standards in a window that looks exactly as it should.
The existing frames are solid, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible call. We complete full assessments first, before we recommend replacement.

Hinged casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and open out to open, creating a larger opening for fresh air and making access from inside simple. They’re widespread on Bearsden properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed styles. Like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.
Our timber casement windows page covers all available options and configurations in full detail.
Why timber is the right choice
Timber has been the leading window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to homeowners.
Natural heat insulation
Did you know timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width? That means better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before you even add the double glazing.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames keep heat in better makes a real effect to what you spend.
Timber windows, repair before replace
The best thing about timber windows is that if something deteriorates, you can fix it.
Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You take it out and splice in new timber. Damaged part of frame? Replace in section. With UPVC, you don’t have that option. When it goes, the entire thing ends up in landfill and you’re starting again.
Think about it: over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than replacing them saves serious money and reduces a lot of material waste.
Sustainability
All timber used in our windows is sourced from sustainably managed forest.
Timber is a natural material that sequesters carbon throughout its working life and biodegrades cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production is extremely energy-intensive, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.
For homeowners for whom the environmental footprint of their property is a priority, timber is the obvious option.
Beauty and appeal
Timber windows have a substance, physical depth, and natural grain that no artificial material can reproduce.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just fit in a way that UPVC never quite manages.
And they add tangible value to a property, especially period homes where period features are what buyers look for.
Double glazed timber windows
Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture feature double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always fitted.
The sealed unit sits within the timber frame, using two sheets of glass with a cavity to cut heat transfer and lift sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the inherent insulating properties of the timber frame, and you’ve got strong thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement.
Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We add glazing bars.
Older frames. Single glazing only. Still structurally sound? We can in many cases convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames are preserved. Performance improves. No full replacement.
It comes up a lot on Bearsden’s older properties, existing sash windows that are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold and road noise like it’s not even there.
Every unit we install meets the latest building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas
Scotland has more than 600 designated conservation areas, and being in one changes what you can do with your windows.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an approved window material, and your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We understand what the council expects.
We can walk you through consent conditions and produce windows that meet every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth if you want to read up.
Timber types
We work with two timber types across all window range, here’s what you need to know about each.
Most people choose treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and performs in Bearsden’s damp weather without any issue.
For properties where a natural timber finish is wanted, or where additional longevity is called for, we offer hardwood, which is inherently more resistant to damage and takes stains and oils beautifully.
Property, exposure level, finish, three things we look at before recommending the right timber for each job. Get those right and the rest follows.
Timber windows, your questions answered
What types of timber windows do you make?
Sash and case is the traditional Bearsden style, sliding up and down in a timber box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward, that’s the other. Both come in treated pine or hardwood. And we produce fixed window panels too, for any opening setup.
Are timber windows worth it over UPVC?
On every counts, performance, longevity, and looks, yes, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at comparable frame widths, lasts considerably longer when properly maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced when damage occurs. Timber is also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
Many cases, yes. The current frames are good, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames remain, character stays, and the thermal and acoustic performance improves, without a full replacement.
