Timber Windows Battlehill

Woodfellas started in Battlehill manufacturing timber windows, and that’s what we’re still doing. We produce, renovate, and install wooden windows from our Battlehill workshop, serving homes and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.

Every window we make is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security installed as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a newer extension, or a full new set for any type of property, we make them in-house and install ourselves.

Our timber window options

Two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and requirements. Both made in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash window types

The traditional Scottish window type.

Sash windows slide up and down within a timber box frame, using a system of weighted cords and pulleys doing the work. They’re the original window type on most of Battlehill’s period tenements, and the correct replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We renovate, repair, and manufacture custom ones matching existing profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic results where it matters.

If your original frames are sound, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the best route. We complete full inspections before recommending any replacement, so you know exactly where you stand.

Standard casement windows

Hinged. Open outward to open. Wider opening, easier access from inside. Common on Battlehill properties built from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is custom-built and double glazed as standard.

All the designs, all the options, it’s on our timber casement windows section.

Why timber windows are the right choice

Timber has been the go-to window material for hundreds of years, and it’s worth knowing why. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to property owners, and that’s not just tradition.

Natural insulating properties

Timber conducts heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. Stronger thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s insulating qualities make a measurable difference.

Fix, don’t replace

Things get damaged. With timber, that’s not the end of the story. You can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be cut out and new timber put in its stead. A damaged portion of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC offers no such route: when it breaks, the entire unit ends up in landfill and the process starts again.

Over a property’s lifespan: repair and maintain, not replace. Cuts money. Cuts material waste.

Eco credentials

We procure all our timber from sustainably managed woodland, so you can be sure it’s ethically produced.

Timber is a sustainable material, it holds carbon as it ages and breaks down naturally when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium manufacturing takes a huge amount of energy.

If the environmental footprint of your home matters to you, timber is the obvious choice. It’s as straightforward as that.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Weight. Depth. Grain. No artificial alternative can copy it.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an aesthetic rightness that UPVC consistently fails to replicate.

Timber windows also contribute tangible value to a property, particularly older properties where period features are what attracts buyers.

Double glazing in wooden windows

Every single window we produce, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame: it’s two layers of glass with a cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and improves sound insulation.

Put that double glazing together with the natural insulating qualities of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement.

Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a straightforward addition that makes a real difference.

Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In many cases we can convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, preserving the original frames and improving performance without a full replacement.

It’s a particularly frequent project on Battlehill’s older properties, solid original sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold and road noise. Easily fixed.

Every unit we install satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal standards. That’s guaranteed.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland has over 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an permitted material, your local council will likely require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

Twenty years of making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council expectations? We’ve been through all of it. We understand what’s required.

We walk you through consent requirements. We build windows that tick every planning condition. Modern performance included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Our timber choices

Two timber types. That’s it. We use both for all window range.

Treated pine is the most requested option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and performs well in Battlehill’s rain-heavy weather.

If a natural timber look is preferred, or if extra strength is called for, hardwood is the option. It’s by nature more wear-resistant and takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure level. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each project.

Timber windows FAQ

Which timber window types do you manufacture?

We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Battlehill style, moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open out. We also build fixed window panels to match any opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

For performance, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be restored not replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Upgrading single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In many cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the existing frames and character while improving thermal and acoustic performance.
