If you need timber windows done properly in Battlefield, Woodfellas are the right choice. We build, restore, and put in timber windows out of our Battlefield base, working across residential properties and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.
Every window that we produce is made to measure from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and improved security are fitted as standard.
Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a contemporary extension, or a full new set for any sort of property, we make them ourselves and fit ourselves.
Our range of timber windows
Two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and needs. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Traditional sash windows
Scotland’s classic window design.
Sash windows operate by sliding vertically within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They are the original window type on most of Battlefield’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, fix, and manufacture custom sash windows designed to match original profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic performance in a window that looks exactly as it should.
Restoration usually includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Most sensible option where existing frames are sound. We inspect everything before recommending replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows are the hinged type: they swing out to open, which gives you a bigger opening for fresh air and means you can clean them easily from inside. They’re standard on Battlefield properties built from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual option for extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations, so whatever setup you need, we can deliver it. And like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard.
All the options, all the options, it’s on our timber casement windows section.
Why timber windows make sense
Timber’s centuries-long position as the go-to window material is not just a question of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter most to households.
Natural thermal performance
Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. This gives you stronger thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even factored in.
Scotland’s not exactly tropical, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames retain warmth better makes a real impact to what you spend.
Repair, not replace
If a timber window gets damaged, the good news is you can repair it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be excised and new timber fitted in its stead. A damaged section of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC offers no such option: when it breaks, the entire unit goes to landfill and everything starts again.
Year after year, repair and maintain rather than start over. Over the life of a property, that means real cost not spent and a lot less material going to landfill.
The sustainable choice
The timber we work with comes from ethically managed forests, every length of it.
Timber is a natural material that sequesters carbon during its lifespan and breaks down naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic made from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.
For homeowners for whom the carbon footprint of their property is a consideration, timber is the clear option.
The character and value of timber windows
Pick up a timber window sash and you notice it, heft, thickness, natural grain. No synthetic alternative can copy that.
On a traditional sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows produce an aesthetic rightness that UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also add genuine value to a property, particularly period properties where period-appropriate features constitute part of the overall appeal.
Double-glazed timber windows
Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.
The sealed unit sits within the timber frame and uses two layers of glass with a sealed cavity. The effect is less heat transfer and better sound insulation.
Put that double glazing together with the natural thermal characteristics of the timber frame, and you’ve got solid thermal and acoustic results across both sash and casement.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light look? We can add those too.
Got older timber windows that are still in good shape but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the original frames and lifting thermal performance without replacing everything.
It’s a very common job on Battlefield’s older properties, well-constructed existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold air and street noise. Easily fixed.
Every unit we fit meets the latest building regulations for thermal standards. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows in listed buildings and conservation areas
Scotland has more than 600 recognised conservation areas.
In a conservation area? UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We understand what the council requires.
We can walk you through consent conditions and build windows that satisfy every planning condition while still giving you modern standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth if you want to read up.
Timber types
Woodfellas works with two types of timber across its entire window range.
Most people pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, takes a paint finish really well, and performs in Battlefield’s rain-heavy weather with no issue.
Want a natural timber finish or need extra durability? Hardwood is what you need, inherently more immune to wear, and it takes stains and oils so well.
Property. Exposure level. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each project.
Common questions about timber windows
What types of timber windows do you produce?
We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Battlefield style, sliding vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing out. We also build fixed window panels to suit any window opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
Yes, for performance, lifespan, and looks, timber is the better choice. It insulates more effectively at the comparable frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. Good existing frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames stay, thermal and acoustic performance improves.
